在以上六个小例中，operate —词分别与汉语的十个词义相对应。诸如此类的英语多义词多得不可胜数，而且有一些多义词的词义之多，令人吃惊。如run的词义有上百种，而set的词义更多（据统计，set作动词用有120余种词义，作名诃用有60 余种词义）。汉语里决不可能找列任何一个词可以包含如此众多而又完全对等的含义。在这个意义上可以说，脱离上下文 的单个词是不可译的。
