4. 双重否定
英语表示双重否定的句子一般可以译成汉语的双重否定式，但有些译成肯定式较好，例如：
 (1)译成双重否定式：
Without coke iron cannot be smelted.
没有焦炭就不能炼铁。
But for your help，I would not have made such good progress in my studies.
没有你的帮助，我不会在学习上取得这么大的进步。
If there were no energy，there would be no force and no work.
没有能量，就不会有力和功。

 (2)译成肯定式：
Energy is nothing but the capacity to do work.
能量就是做功的能力。
They never work without helping each other.
他们工作时总是互相帮助。
It is none other than zinc,
这就是锌。

5. 表示否定的习惯用语
英语中有不少表示否定的习用短语，其中有些词的原义并无否定的意思，但和别的词搭配在一起，就可以用来表示否定。这种习惯用语有动词短语，形容词短语，副词短语，介词短语等好多种，遇到时要多查辞典，以免误译。例如：
This equation is far from being complicated.
这个方程式一点也不复杂。
This lake is free of ice in the winter,
这个湖冬天不结冰。
I am quite in the dark about the matter.
这件事我一点也不知道。
We gave him some good advice. but he made light of it.
我们给他忠告，但他不当一回事。
He made little of his illness.
他认为自己的病无关紧要。

6. 表示否定的特殊结构
英语中还有一些表示否定的特殊结构，如“too…to…”，“not (no)…until...”，“not (no)…

unless…”等，翻译时要注意，例如：
(1)too…to…太......（以致）不能……
Farad is too large a unit to be used in radio calculation.
法拉这单位太大，在无线电计算中不便采用。
Gasoline is too volatile to be kept in an open vessel.
汽油太易挥发，不能装在敞口容器中。
The change is too little to be observed.
变化太小，观察不出。
(2)not (no) …unless，not (no)…until...
不……不……（相当于双重否定）
Don't open the door until the train stops.
火车未停不要开门。
The path is not complete until the wires are joined.
没有导线连接，电路就不完整.
