八、for的译法
1. for引导的介词短语表示目的、用途，在句中作状语时，可译为“为了”、“用于”、 “用来”、“适合于”等。for引导的表示目的的介词短语常译成动宾结构，但有时因汉语表达习惯的需要，也可以灵活翻译。如：
* The smelting reduction process can be applied for the production of iron as well as ferroalloys.
熔融还原法可用于生产铁及铁合金。
2. for引导的介词短语作定语时，常可译为汉语的“的”字结构，但因表达的需要， 介词for常常省译。如：
* The temperature coefficient of the resistance is positive for metals and negative for semiconductors.
金属的电阻温度系数是正的，而半导体的是负的。
3. 表示所涉及的对象，可译为“对于”、“对……而言（来说)”，或根据上下文灵活翻译。如：
* For the lighter elements the absorption coefficient is approximately proportional1 to the density of the material.
对较轻的元件来说，吸收系数与材料的密度大致成正比。
4.表示理由或原因，可译为“因（为）”、“由于”等。如：
The old hydraulic elevator to the top could not be used in winter for fear the water would freeze.
因怕水结冰，所以通往塔顶的老式液压升降机在冬天不能使用。
5. 表示交換或交替，可译为“换”、“用……代替”、“代表”等，但也可以根据需要省译或灵活掌握。如：
* It is possible to substitute ball bearings for plain bearings in these devices.
在这些装置中，可用滚珠轴承代替滑动轴承。
