Many proper names have been well translated, but there are also some persons and places mistransliterated. We may give quite a number of examples here. Such names of persons as Caesar⑥, Eden⑦, Bethune⑧, Bernard Shaw, etc., and such names of places as Athens⑨, Seattle⑩, Oxford, Cambridge, etc.，are either inaccurate in pronunciation or even ridiculous in translation. But as they have been popularly known, they are generally accepted and well established. We have no idea to change these names or to retranslate them. To do so, we would perhaps create new confusion among the readers, instead of getting rid of unreasonable Translations.

But if there are two or more current translated names for one foreign person or place, of which none is very popular, you should have no hesitation to retranslate it into a new name according to the first two rules.

关于外国专有名词汉译的问题，还要记住两点：一是外国人的名字，特别是长期住在中国、工作在中国的ー些外国人，往往喜欢把自己的名字中国化，即听起来很像中国人的姓名，Kulessa译成“孔雷飒”就是一例，“赛珍珠”亦然。ニ是音译要采用译音表所规定的汉字，不要用那些容易引起联想的字。如Kulessa可译成“孔雷飒”，不能译成“裤里塞”；问样“辟果提” (Peggotty) 不能译成“怕狗踢”，等等”

三、外国专有名同的义释：一般说来，大多数专有名词用音译；但一部分确有明确含义者，应用义译。
