In these examples, though English metaphorical sentences each involve a human participant or an implied human participant, they are translated into Chinese inanimate sentences. Of course, some of them can be translated into animate sentences. (24) and (25), for example, can be translated as:
我没有注意到他的暗示。
我在书中提到汤姆。
However, the inanimate sentences sound more natural in Chinese.
Up to now, the English metaphorical sentences provided in the preceding sections were all represented by Subject-verb or
Subject-verb-Object/Complement transitivity systems. Those that are represented by verb-Object transitivity systems will be discussed in the following.
Compared with the other two kinds of metaphorical sentences, those that are represented by verb-Object transitivity systems can be translated into Chinese more easily. They are usually translated into Chinese with the same Subjects, making necessary adjustment in the predicates. For instance:
(26) She is doing her knitting.
她在打毛衣。
(27) He took no notice of my complaints.
他没有注意到我的不满。
(28) I have an esteem for him.
我尊敬他。
(29) He embraced my offer.

(33) The prisoners received harsh and unfair treatment.

(34) Then she turned her attention to another problem.
这时,她把注意力转向了另一个问题。
(35) They weighed the matter seriously.
他们认真地考虑了这件事。
However, sometimes the Subject of an English metaphorical sentence has to be changed to suit the Chinese expression. Look at the following two examples:
(36) Everybody sees imperialism growing weaker.
帝国主义日趋衰落。
(37) He had justice on his side.
正义在他的一边。
