Just as Darwin discovered the law of development of organic nature，so Marx discovered the law of development of human history, the simple fact, hitherto concealed by an overgrowth of ideology, that mankind must first of all eat, drink，have shelter and clothing, before it can pursue politics，science，art, religion, etc. ; that therefore the production of the immediate

material means of subsistence and consequently the degree of economic development attained by a given people or during a given epoch form the foundation upon which the state institutions the legal conceptions art even the ideas on religion of the people concerned have been evolved and in the light of which they must therefore be explained instead of vice versa as had hitherto been the case.

通过句子分析，我们可以看到，这个长句是以基本句子Marx discovered the law of development of human history 为基出而扩展开来的。如果这个根基不存在，其余各分枝就成了无本之木，也就是说，不可能存在。有的学者分析说，英语的句子结构是"树形式"，这是符合英语的实际情况的。

汉语不是曲折语，也不是粘着语，而是孤立语（isolated language ), 是一 种通过词序和功能词表示语 法作用的语言 。因此, 笔者以为对汉语的句型研究不宜采用英语句型研究的模式去进行。 

当代汉语学家按功能把句子划分为三种：判断句、叙述句、描写句。这也叫做"句类"。而按结构来划分，汉语句子有单句、复句、主谓句、非主谓句。这称为"句型"。笔者觉得，主谓句与英语的基本句型和常用句型近似点较多。因此，将汉语主谓句跟英语的句型进行对比，可以看出一些端倪。

所谓主谓句，是由主谓结构组成的句子。主谓句又按其结构 分成主语句和谓语句。这样划分可看出汉语句型的特点之一：汉语不像英语以动词为核心来划分句型，而是主谓并重。而且在一 定程度上，汉语比较侧重主语的分析。主语句由各类实词性词语做主语构成，这些实词性词语包括：名词性词语、动词性词语、形 容词性词语、主谓词组。充当四类词语的词和词组较多，归纳起 来有16种，也就构成16种常用的主语句句型：

(一)名词性主语句

1. 生活是什么？(名词）

2. 文学巨人何以被贬低？ 定中词组) 

3. 八角一尺。(量词词组）

4. 两江相汇处有一个小城。 (方位词组）

5. 暄哗最厉害的是胜方。("的"字词组)

6. 吕叔湘这位学界前辈为本书作序。 (复指词组2)
