Wu Long Jin Ye Bie

(The Five Kinds of Body Fluids)

Yellow Emperor asked Qibo:"When the water and cereals enter into the mouth and then, being transmitted into the intestine, they will divide into five kinds of fluid: when the weather is cold and ones clothes are thin, most of them will be changed into urine and vapour, when the weather is hot in summer and one's clothes are thick, most of them will be-wet; when one's mood is in sorrow and the energy merges into the heart, they will transform into tears; when there is heat in the middle warmer and the stomach energy is flaccid and slow, they will change into saliva. When the evil energy is blocking inside, the Yang energy is obstructed and fails to circulate, edema will occur. I know the conditions above, but I do not know whence does the body fluid generate, and I hope to hear about it."

Qibo said:"When the food enters the mouth, it has different tastes of sour, bitter, sweat, acrid and salty, and they pour into the four seas respectively. The body fluids transformed from the water and cereals and spread along certain routes individually.  The Wei-energy issued from the upper warmer which moistens the muscle and maintains the skin is called the thin fluid, and that which is retained unmoved is called the fluid.

"When one's clothes in summer are rather thick, his sweat pores open and he will perspire. When the cold-evil retains bet ween the boundaries of muscles, the body fluid will be condensed into foam and pain will occur. When one's sweat pores are closed in winter, his energy will be unsmooth due to obstruction, the fluid will flow into the bladder below to become urine and vapour.

"Among the five solid organs and the six hollow organs, the heart is the dominator and the activities of other viscera are under its control; the ears take charge of the hearing, the eyes take charge of the sight seeing, the lung takes charge of assisting like a prime minister, the liver takes charge of the scheming like a general, the spleen takes charge of defending, and the kidney which stores the essence of life takes charge of supporting the outer activities of the whole body. All the body fluids of the five solid organs and the six hollow organs ascend to pour into the eyes; when one has sorrow in heart, the energies of the five solid organs and the six hollow organs will ascend and merge into the heart causing the channels and collaterals of the heart to become tense, when they become tense, the lobes of lung will be lifted up and the body fluid will ascend to become overflowing. But the lobes of lung can not be lifted up constantly when the channels and collaterals of heart are tense, and the energy can only now rise, now fall, thus, when the fluid ascends along with the energy and become overflowing, the phenomenon of crying with breathing and open mouth will occur.
