(Acupuncture for Treating the Febrile Diseases of the Viscera)

肝热病者，小便先黄[按“小便”二字与“先”字误倒，应作“先小便黄”]，腹痛多卧身热，热争[《太平圣惠方》卷十七《热病论》引“争”作“盛”]，则狂言及[《太平圣惠方》“及”作“多”]惊，胁满[《太素》卷二十五《五藏热病》“胁”下无“满”字]痛，手足躁，不得安卧;庚辛甚，甲乙大汗，气逆则庚辛死。刺足厥阴少阳。其逆则头痛员员[按“其逆”七字，似误窜移]，脉引冲头也[此五宇字疑古注所错，宜删]。

In the febrile disease from liver, the syndromes of yellow urine, abdominal pain, be fond of sleeping and fever of the patient will occur first. When the heat is excessive, rave, often be startled, hypochondriac pain, restlessness of the hands and feet, uable to sleep of the patient will occur; if the liver energy is reversing upwards, the patient will have dizziness. The disease will become aggravating on the days of Geng and Xin and the patient will be alleviated with plenty perspiration on the days of Jia and Yi. If the energy of the patient has become disorderly already, he will die on the days of Geng and Xin. In treating, it should prick the Foot Jueyin and the Foot Shaoyang channels.

心热病者，先不乐，数日乃热，热争，则卒心痛[《甲乙》“则”下无“卒痛”二字，“心”字连下“烦闷”读]，烦闷[《太平圣惠方》“闷”作“热”]善呕，头痛面赤，无汗;壬癸甚，丙丁大汗，气逆则壬癸死。刺手少阴太阳。

In the febrile disease from heart, the patient will appear to be unhappy first, and will have fever after a few days. When the heat is excessive, the patient will have feverish sensation accompanied with restlessness, nausea, headache, redish face and anhidrosis. The disease will become aggravating on the Ren and Gui days, and the patient will be alleviated with plenty perspiration on the days of Bing and Ding. If the energy of the patient has become disorderly already, he will die on the days of Ren and Gui. In treating, it should prick the Hand Shaoyin and the Hand Taiyang channels.

脾热病者，先头重颊痛，烦心颜青[《甲乙》《病论》并无“颜青”二字]，欲呕身热，热争，则腰痛不可用[明抄二“不可”下无“用”字]傀仰，腹满[《圣济总录》引“满”下无“泄”字]泄，两领痛;甲乙甚，戊已大汗，气逆则甲乙死。刺足太阴阳明。

The patient with the febrile disease from spleen will feel heavy of the head, pain between the two eyes and eyebrows, disquieted, feel like to vomit and have fever of the body first. When the heat is excessive, the patient will have lumbago, unable to stoop or elevate, have abdominal distention and hypochondriac pain. The disease will be aggravating on the

days of Jai and Yi, and the patient will have plenty perspiration on the days of Wu and Ji.  If the energy of the patient has become disorderly already, he will die on the days of Jia and Yi. In treating, it should prick Foot Taiyin and the Foot Yangming channels.

肺热病者，先淅然厥，起毫毛，恶风寒[《太素》《病论》“风”下并无“寒”字]，舌上黄身热，热争，则喘劾，痛走胸膺[明抄二“膺”作“应”]背，不得大息，头痛不堪，汗出而[《伤寒总病论》引“而”下有“恶”字]寒;丙丁甚，庚辛大汗，气逆则丙丁死。刺手太阴阳明，出血如大豆[《伤寒总病论》引作“豆大”]，立[《伤寒九十论》引“立”作]。

The patient with the febrile disease from lung will feel cold with goose skin, to have an aversion to wind, have yellow tongue and fever in the body first. When the heat is excessive, the patient will cough with rapid respiration. The cough will shake the chest to cause pain and affects the back. The patient can hardly breath deeply, and the unbearable headache will cause him to have cold sweat continuously. The disease will become aggravating on the days of Bing and Ding, and the patient will be alleviated with plenty of perspiration on the days of Geng and Xin. If the energy of the patient has become disorderly already, he will die on the days of Bing and Ding. In treating, it should prick the Hand Taiyin and Hand Yangming channels. The disease will be cured when blood drops of pea size occur after pricking.

肾热病者，先腰痛䯒痠[《病论》“䯒”作“胫”，苦渴数伙，身热，热争，则项痛而强䯒寒且痠，足下热，不欲言，其逆则项痛员员澹澹[《甲乙》“员员”下无“澹澹”二字，按“员员”谓病之急]然；戊已甚，壬癸大汗，气逆则戊已死。刺足少阴太阳。诸汗者，至其所胜日汗出也[《太素》无“诸汗”以下十一字]。

The patient with the febrile disease from kidney will feel pain in the loins, soreness of the legs, thirsty, desires to drink and has fever in the body first. When the heat is excessive, the patient will have headache and a rigid neck, his legs are cool and sore, his feet are hot, and he is relunctant to speak. If the kidney energy goes up adversely, the patient will feel pain and stiffness of the neck. The disease will become aggravating on the days of Wu and Ji, and the patient will be alleviated with plenty perspiration on the days of Ren and Gui. If the energy of the patient has become disorderly already, he will die on the days of Wu and Ji. In treating, prick the Foot Shaoyin and Foot Taiyang channels.

肝热病者，左颊先赤;心热病者，颜[《病论》“颜”作“额”]先赤;脾热病者，鼻[《太平圣惠方》“鼻”作“唇”，《病论》“病”上有“凡”字]先赤;肺热病者，右颊先赤；肾热病者，颐先赤。病虽未发，见赤[《太素》“见”下有“其”字]色者刺之，名曰治未病。热病从部所起者，至[《太素》“至”下有“其”字]期而已;其刺之反者，三周而已；重逆则死。诸当汗者，至其所胜日，汗大出也。

In febrile disease, when the heat is in the liver, the red colour will appear on the left cheek of the patient first; when the heat is in the heart, the red colour will appear on the forehead first; when the heat is in the spleen, the red colour will appear on the lips first; when the heat is in the lung、 the red colour will appear on the right cheek first; when the heat is in the kidney, the red colour will appear on the cheeks first. Generally, one should treat at the time when the red colour appears on the face before the disease attacks, which is called the treating in advance.

If the red colour in a specific position of the face is seen before the febrile disease attacks, and if the disease is treated in time, it can be cured on the day which is over-coming. If the treating is in an adverse way,the disease will last for three weeks, but if it is maltreated again, the patient will die. In a word, when treating a febrile disease, diaphoresis should be used, if the treating is in time, the disease can be cured on the day when the visceral energy is overcoming by diaphoresis.
