另外，当汉语表示一般性或泛指性的内容时，通常会省略主语，而在英语中却需要用补充人称代词“one/you/we/they”等作主语。例如：

打蛇先打头，擒贼先擒王。

If you want to kill a snake you must hit it first on the head and if you want to catch a band of robbers you must first catch their leader.

不能吃了饼又想留着。（英谚：凡事不能两全其美。）

You cannot eat your cake and have it.

去年下了不少雪。

We had much snow last year.

还有一种情况是汉语句子中对名词进行重复是为了起强调作用。译成英文时可使用关系代词“whoever/whichever”等。例如：

谁在公共场所吐痰，谁就要挨罚。

Whoever spits in a public place will be fined.

这三幅画中你最爱哪一幅，就拿哪一幅。

Take whichever of the three paintings you like best.

除上述几个方面外，还有一个汉、英在代词使用上的位置不同的问题常常被忽视，那就是当主句和从句同时提到同一个人或事物时，汉语的习惯是不论主句、从句的先后顺序，先说名词，后用代词；而英语中往往是主句用名词，从句用物主代词，例如：

在新市长的就职演说中，他强调了市政府要办十件实事的重要性。

In his inauguration address, the new mayor stressed the importance of ten major projects designated on the municipal government's agenda.

这部电视连续剧开播以来，引起了观众极大的兴趣。

Since its premiere, the series has aroused intense interest among TV viewers.
