由于英语和汉语表达习惯的不同，特别是由于汉语中没有冠词，所以在汉译英的过程中，常常会忽略冠词的使用，造成失误，请注意下面的译例：

1）文字的力量大于武力。（笔比刀剑更有力。）

Pen is mightier than sword. (wrong)

The pen is mightier than the sword. (right)

2）家庭和健康之间存在着密不可分的关系。

There exists between family and health an intimate and inseparable relationship. (wrong)

There exists between a family and health an intimate and inseparable relationship. (right)

分析：汉语中一个名词本身的词义就可以表示类别，但从上面两例可以看出，在英语中单数名词表示泛指或类指时，应该在它的前面加上不定冠词或定冠词，不能随意省略。

3）太阳从东方升起。

Sun rises in the east. (wrong)

The sun rises in the east. (right)

4）向左拐个弯，你就可以找到邮局了。

Turn to left and you will find the post office. (wrong)

Turn to the left and you will find the post office. (right)

分析：像太阳、月亮、天空这类表示世界上独一无二的事物的名词在使用时必须加定冠词。同样，表示方位、方向的名词前也要使用定冠词。

5）我喜欢这些知识分子。

I like the intellectuals. (wrong)

I like these intellectuals. (right)

分析：“the intellectuals”可以指“这些知识分子”，也可泛指“一切知识分子”，容易引起误解。因为定冠词加上某些名词的复数可以表示特指，也可表示一个民族、阶级或泛指某类人，所以为避免歧义，最好改为“these intellectuals”。

6）他是个诗人兼作家。

He was a poet and a novelist. (wrong)

He was a poet and novelist. (right)

分析：当一个名词兼有后面两个甚至是多个身份时，冠词通常只加在第一个名词前，后面的一律省略。同样，当两个名词成组出现时，也不必重复使用冠词,如：新郎新娘(the bride and groom),带链子的表(a watch and chain),刀叉(the knife and fork)等。

7）你要注意那个人。

You keep eyes on that man. (wrong)

You keep an eye on that man.(right)

8）我弟弟有音乐欣赏力。

My younger brother has ears for music. (wrong)

My younger brother has an ear for music. (right)

9）我牙疼得厉害。

I've got a bad toothache. (wrong)

I've got bad toothache.(right)

分析：虽然我们可以说“to have a headache”,但其他的疼痛(toothache,earache 等）是不可数名词，不能加冠词。

10）英国女王伊丽莎白二世备受拥戴。

Elizabeth IⅡ, the Queen of England enjoyed full support. (wrong)

Elizabeth IⅢ, Queen of England enjoyed full support. (right)

分析：在这个结构中，表身份的词在句子中作补语，而且指的是独一无二的身份，因为英国只有一位女王，所以不用冠词。相似的表达还有：He wasmade captain of the team.(他被选为这个队的队长。）

总之，冠词使用规则虽然较复杂，但基本原则是不变的：遇到复数名词或不可数名词表示泛指时，不使用冠词，而当遇到单数可数名词时，不要忘了加上冠词。
