例 2 The greatness of a people is no more determined by their number than the greatness of a man is determined by his height.

译文：正如一个人的伟大不取决于他的身高一样，一个民族的伟大也不取决于其人口多少。

在“no more ... than +从句/not ... any more than +从句”的结构中，否定词不但否定than前面的内容，也否定than后面的内容。事实上，than前面的内容和它后面的内容是同等意义上的否定句，且两者构成某种意义上的类比。因此，than后面的从句只能用肯定式，不能用任何否定词。

在此顺便谈谈两对否定短语 no more than 与 not more than, no less than 与 not less than 的译法。not more than 相当于 at most(至多），而 no more than 相当于 only(只有）；而not less than可译为“不下于”、“至少”、“不比……差”，no less than译为“达…… 之多”、“和……一样”。

例 3 The film is not instructive and interesting.

译文：这部影片颇有教育意义，但是没有趣味。

有人会把上句理解为“这部影片既无教育意义，又没有趣味”。如果把原句中的and改为or，那么这种译文是对的。我们在翻译这种句子的时候要注意：当and在…not ...and... 结构中连接两个状语（或定语，或表语）的时候，与之搭配的not表示部分否定，即只否定 and后面的部分。

动词:lose，scorn，lack, outlive, outgrow，ignore，neglect，refuse，deny, miss 等；名词： absence，failure，denial，refusal，lack，exclusion，omission，ignorance, neglect, loss, draw (不分胜负）等；形容词：bad，doubtful，little，few，foreign (无关的），strange, missing, ignorant，short of, free from，far from，blind to 等;副词:in for(免不了），in the air(悬而未决），at large, in the rough(未成熟）等；介词：above, before, beyond，under, within, beneath，past,but，without，except，instead of,in place of, out of，anything but 等；连词：unless, until，or，lest，rather than，much more, still less, let alone 等。
