翻译名词时应结合上下文选定合适的含义，切忌望文生义，主观臆测。一般要注意下列三个方面的问题：
1. 照译和转换
照译就是直接按词的本义译出。名词大多可以照译。在少数情况下则需要转換。如果英语里使用某一名词时，不是根据它的本义，而是如以借用，作了发展和引伸，则翻译时须辨明本义和引伸义，适当地进行转换，才能确切地加以表迖。例如：

There are three steps which must be taken before we graduate from the integrated circuit technology. 我们要完全掌握集成电路工艺，必须采取三项措施。

The major contributors in component technology have been in the semiconductor components. 元件技术中起主要作用的一直是半导体元件。

Dust has a very important part to play in the work of nature. 灰尘对于自然界的变化起很大的作用。

Alloys belong to a half-way house between, mixtures and compounds. 合金是介于混合物和化合物之间的一种中间结构。

翻译时为了照顾汉语的语法修辞习惯，有时须将英语里的名词译成汉语里的其他词类，这也是一种转换，叫做词性转换。例如：
The tests indicate that a countercurrent flow of gases and solids is necessary in the reactor.试验表明，使气体和固体在反应器内逆向流动是必要的。
He had a good knowledge of physics.他精通物理学。
Laser is one of the most sensational developments in recent years, because of its applicability to many fields of science and its adaptability to practical uses. 激光是近年来最轰动的科学成就之一，因为它可以应用于许多科学领域，也适合各种实际用途。
Reversing the direction of the current reverses the direction of its lines of force. 倒转电流的方向也就倒转了它的磁力线的方向。（以上四例为动作性名词转译成动词）

The combination of mechanical properties of this alloy can be well achieved by heat treatment. 这种合金能通过热处理获得良好的综合机械性能。

Additional power is required for the reduction of the FeO content in tte sponge iron. 需要额外的电力来还原海绵铁中所含的FeO。(以上二例是名词转译成形容词）
