文学离不开形象，科学也需要形象。王佐良先生在他的《现代英语的多种功用》一文中引用过现代核子物理奠基人之一、哥本哈根学派的创始人波尔(Niels Bohr)的观点：
Niels Bohr's taste also ran to poetry. He said to Heisenberg, “When it comes to atoms，language can be used only as in poetry. The poet, too，is not nearly so concerned with describing facts as with creating images. ” That is an unexpected thought ： when it comes to atoms, language is not describing facts but creating images. But it is so. What lies below the visible world is always imaginary, in the literal sense： a play of images.
并说，“最高的科学境界同最高的诗的境界都是只能用形象表现的。”“正是在形象上，人们找到了文学和科学的汇合点。”因此，对于诗或科学作品（如果该作品有形象的话)的翻译，都只能通过形象或形象的转换才能表达。

一、直译形象
如文学翻译一样，科技翮译中的形象大多可直接译出。试比较美国诗人Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 的 A Psalm of Life 和科普作家 Lynn Margulis 等的 What Is Life 从不同角度通过形象来描述并歌颂生命。两者的汇合点在形象，翻译语言的闪光点也在形象。

Tell me not in mournful numbers，
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers?
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal；

What Is Life
What is life? It is a material process that sifts and surfs over matter like a strange, slow wave； a planetary exuberance; a solar phenomenon — the astronomically local transmutation of Earth's air，water, and received sunlight into cells. Life can be seen as an intricate pattern of growth and death，dispatch and retrenchment, transformation and decay. Connected through Darwinian time to the first bacteria and through Vernadskian space to all citizens of the biosphere, life is a single，expanding network. Life is matter gone wild, capable of choosing its own direction in order to forestall indefinitely the inevitable moment of thermodynamic equilibrium — death. Life is also a question the universe poses to itself in the form of a human being.
什么是生命？
什么是生命？生命是肉体的一段过程，在此过程中物质犹如在缓缓波浪的异动中得到筛洗；生命是地球的勃勃生机；生命是一种太阳现象--地球上的空气、水和接收到的阳光大量地局部转化为细胞的现象。生命可视作生长与死亡、发散与回收、转化与衰退相交织的复杂模式。达尔文的时间观念与最早的细菌共生，韦尔纳茨基 的空间观念与生物圈中的所有成员同存，于是生命就成为不断扩大的单一网络。生 命是纯属自然的物质，它能自主地选择运动方向，不定地延缓热动平衡不可避免的转 折——死亡。生命也是宇宙以人的形式对自身的质疑。

《人生颂》四句一节，共九节，以上为第一、二节。《什么是生命》则是一本高级科普读物，以上仅为其中一小段。两者都以生命为题，描写了生命的历程，并以不同方式歌颂了生命。两者在不同程度上都采用了形象、比喻等手法。诗曰：“Life is real! Life is earnest!”(人生是实在 的,人生不是虚无。)书曰:“It (life) is a material process. ”(生命是肉体的一段过程。）两者讲 的是一个意思。诗用dust，grave, goal (尘土、坟墓、极终地)等形象描写来提示人生的历程； 书既用air, water, sunlight (空气、水、阳光)等对人生作客观描述，又用slow wave, exuber?ance, network (缓缓波浪、勃勃生机、网络)等作形象描述。诗中的dust和书中的cells, bacteria 都是可以激发读者想象力的词语。由上可知，无论是艺术的创造，还是科学的描绘都离不开形象。由于描述的形象和手段不同，便会产生不同特点的描述意象。而艺术语言是塑造 形象的工具。翻译中，对再造形象都力求神形毕肖。又如：
