科学与艺术具有不同的准则和方法，但两者对自然界和人性奥秘的探索是共同的。越来越多的现代文学作品包含科技内容;另一方面，许多科技作品具有劝导性和修辞性，不少文学手段已成为阐明科学技术的工具。翻译中讲究艺术才能为更多读者接受。
赫胥黎的《天演论》是科普作品，严复的翻译文字精美绝伦，其文学性和艺术性举世公认，首段如：
