If English metaphorical sentences can be translated into Chinese complex sentences, they can be translated into compound sentences in Chinese since complex sentences and compound sentences usually have a relation of systematic correspondence (Quirk, et al, 1985: 57). The difference is that the logical relationship between the clauses is overt in a complex sentence but covert in a compound sentence. Consider the following examples:
(1) A few steps along the corridor brought me to a large hall.
我沿着走廊走了几步,就到了一个华丽的大厅。
(2) Fortunately the dense fog had prevented the enemy from discovering that the lines were unoccupied.
幸而大雾沉沉,敌人并没有发现(美军)前线无人防守。
(3) His words sent a quiver through my body.
我听了他的话,不禁打了个寒战。
(4) His adventurous exploits soon won him notoriety.
他作战英勇,屡建战功,很快就名声远扬。
(5) An 80-minute drive took us to the Ming Tombs' Reservoir.
汽车开了80分钟,我们来到十三陵水库。
(6) Absence and distance make the overseas Chinese heart increasingly fond of Beijing.
海外华人远离故土,千里迢迢地旅居异乡,自然越来越怀念北京。
In these examples, English metaphorical sentences are translated into Chinese compound sentences. While the predicates are translated into animate clauses, the Subjects are translated into a coordinate clause. Though the relationship between the coordinate clauses in each Chinese sentence is not overt, it can be made clear without effort.
While sentences (55) and (59) have temporal relationships, all the other sentences involve causal relationships.
These three sections have presented a study on different methods of translating English metaphorical sentences into Chinese nonmetaphorical sentences. Though the English metaphorical sentences are all inanimate sentences, the Chinese translations all involve animate Subjects. In the complex sentences, usually the superordinate clauses are animate. In the compound sentences, either coordinate clause may be animate.
When an English metaphorical sentence is translated into an animate sentence in Chinese, it must involve a human participant or an implied human participant. Otherwise, the English metaphorical sentence cannot be translated into an animate sentence in Chinese.
Sometimes, however, even when the English metaphorical sentence involves a human participant or an implied human
participant, it cannot be translated into an animate sentence in Chinese, either.
