现代旅游业在欧美等经济强国要比在中国发达。这个为旅行游览提供服务的行业包括与旅游有关的交通业、旅馆业、饮食业、 娱乐业和制造业。在国外攻读MBA,有“hospitality management” 这个专业如何翻译得确切，迄今仍困扰着业内人士。有将其非正式译成“饭店管理专业”、“酒店管理专业”、“餐馆管理专业”、“旅店、餐饮管理专业”、“旅游管理专业”、“旅游服务管理专业”或“旅馆接待管理专业”。从宏观角度来看汉英之间的语义场对比，我们发现，汉语中没有与hospitality相对应的词，出现了词项空缺：

 

Hospitality≠旅馆业/饭店（酒店）业/接待业/饮食业/娛乐业/旅游业；  

但是，

Hospitality =旅馆业+饭店（酒店）业+饮食业+ 娱乐业+接待业等。

换言之,上述 “hospitality” 跟 hospitality industry 有关,后者指 “all companies involved in providing services for guests (hotels, inns, restaurants and other recreational activities)” ，所以hospitality (management)的内涵不仅仅只表达一种意义或功能。而汉语中的上述几个词项，其各自内涵或功能又不能包括 hospitality (management）之全部。例如，hospitality 可以译成“接待业”，但前者不包括“旅行社接待”,而后者不仅可以指旅馆接待 (服务）、餐饮接待(服务）、娱乐接待（服务），而且可以同时指旅行社接待(服务）等。若将hospitality management译成旅游管理，含义肯定太宽泛。因为 hospitality management≠ tourism management。“tourism” 指“business of providing travel, acoommodation, food，entertainment, etc.，for tounsts"。除非hospitality的意义范围缩小，又与中文在相同的语境下和上下文中，否则我们很难在汉语中替它找到一个对等的词项。因为英语中一词多义现象很普遍，英语中该词的搭配范围不同，同时汉语是一种高度孤立型语目或分析型语言。这种语言的特点是词型不变，语法功能由词序和功能词表示，而英语是一种综合型语言，其特点是词缀丰富，且比汉语要丰富得多。英语中不少通过词缀来表达的意义， 在汉语中往往要借助词汇或其他手段来表达。如果对上述这些差异有所了解，翻译时就容易避免误译。 

 

例 1. Cantonese have the reputation of being hospitable people.

hospitality分译为“殷情好客”。

例 2. Special requests and attention to individual details are all part of our Efficiency and Hospitality.

这里的“Hospitality”应译成“热情”或“好客”。

例 3. Great changes have taken place in China’s hospitality industry since 1989.

根据国内饭店业（尤其是涉外饭店）的发展情况，hospitality译成“旅馆业”较为妥当，也可以用 “ hotel industry” 替代。 

例 4. hospitality operation

hospitality应译成“饭店/旅馆/酒店（业）经 菅'

例 5. hospitality requirement 

hospitality分指“招待”。

例 6, In the hospitality suite /room, people- often bold meetings，giving receptions or parties rather than sleep in there.

划线部分指“饭店因公用于招待、娱乐等的社交活动（室/室内场所）”，即“a room or suite esp, in a hotel set aside as a place for socializing esp. for business purposes”并非像某些词典译的“客厅套房”等。

 

例 7 hospitality pad 

hospitality跟餐饮业有关，短语指餐厅服务员用 的电子/自动点菜器/机，即“small portable electronic pad on which a waiter or waitress can keep orders for food or drink (the orders axe then relayed to the kitchen and bar，and are also logged to output the bill )"改革开放二十多年，涉外宾馆在硬件软件方面均提高很大。比较而言，总是软件方面的提高难度大一些。迄今为止，对宾馆服务员来说，不懂rooming list为何意就算还情有可原，然而不少对 一些room type叫不出名、不知其意或搞混的事还会发生。
