黄帝问于伯高日:人之肥瘦大小寒温，有老壮少小，别之奈何?伯高对日:人年五十已上为老，二十已上为壮，十八已上为少，六岁已上为小。

Yellow Emperor asked Bogao: "How to distinguish the fat or thin, large or small, cold or hot and the senile, robust, young and infantile conditions of a man?" Bogao said: "When one is more than fifty, he is old; when he is more than twenty, he is robust; when he is more than eighteen, he is young, when he is more than six, he is infantile."

黄帝日;何以度知其肥瘦?伯高日:人有肥有膏有肉。黄帝日:别此奈何?伯高曰:朋肉坚，皮满者，肥。腘肉不坚，皮缓者，膏。皮肉不相离者，肉。

Yellow Emperor asked:"How to estimate them?" Bogao said:"There are three types of human body: the fat type, the puffy type and the muscular type." Yellow Emperor asked:"How to distinguish them?" Bogao said: "When one's protruding muscle is firm and his skin is full, he is of the fat type; when his protruding muscle is infirm and his skin is loose, he is of the puffy type; when his skin and muscle are connecting tightly, he is of the muscular type."

黄帝日:身之寒温何如?伯高日:膏者其肉淖，而粗理者身寒，细理者身热。脂者其肉坚，细理者热，粗理者寒。

Yellow Emperor asked: "How to distinguish the cold and heat types of the body?" Bogao said:"The muscle of the man of puffy type is moist, if his texture is coarse, he can stand the cold, if his texture is fine and dense, he can stand the heat. The muscle of the man of the fat type is firm and substantial, if his texture is fine and dense, he can stand the heat, if his texture is coarse, he can stand the cold."

黄帝日:其肥瘦大小奈何?伯高日:膏者，多气而皮纵缓，故能纵腹垂腴。肉者，身体容大。脂者，其身收小。

Yellow Emperor asked:"What are the conditions when one's body is fat or thin, large or small?" Bigao said: "For a man of the puffy type, his energy is overabundant, his skin is loose and flaccid, so, his abdominal muscles are loose and his belly is hanging down. For a man of muscular type, the capacity of his body is larger. For a man of the fat type, his muscle is tight and dense, and his type of build is smaller."

黄帝日:三者之气血多少何如?伯高日:膏者多气，多气者热，热者耐寒。肉者多血则充形，充形则平。脂者，其血清，气滑少，故不能大。此别于众人者也。黄帝曰:众人奈何?伯高日:众人皮肉脂膏不能相加也，血与气不能相多，故其形不小不大，各自称其身，命日众人。

Yellow Emperor asked: "What are the conditions of the plenty or few energy and blood in the fat, puffy and muscular types of people?" Bogao said: "A man of puffy type has plenty of energy, and his physique is hot, so he can stand the cold. A man of muscular type has plenty of blood which can substantialize the physique, so his temperament is moderate. For a man of the fat type, his blood is lucid, his energy is slippery and few, so his body can not be stout. These are the differences from that of a common man." Yellow Emperor asked:"What are the conditions of the energy and blood of a common man?" Bogao said: "Generally, the skin, muscle and fat can not be added to the body, the blood and energy are keeping balance, none of them can be partially overabundant, so, one's body can only be kept in the normal size to fit the skin, muscle, tendon and bone of the whole body, a man like this is supposed to be a common man."

黄帝曰:善。治之奈何?伯高曰:必先别其三形，血之多少，气之清浊，而后调之，治无失常经。是故膏人，纵腹垂腴;肉人者，上下容大;脂人者，虽脂不能大者。

Yellow Emperor asked: "How to treat them?" Bogao said: "One must distinguish the plenty or few of the blood and the lucid or turbid of the energy in the three types of body first before treating. When treating, one must not divorce from the principle of the normal circulation of the Wei-energy. It must be noted that the people of the puffy type, their abdominal muscles are loose and flaccid, their bellies are hanging down; in the people of the muscular type, their capacities in the upper and the lower body are larger: in the people of the fat type, although their fats are plenty, yet their bodies can not be as large as the people of the puffy type and the muscular type."
