(The Evil Wind)

黄帝日:夫子言贼风邪气之伤人也，令人病焉，今有其不离屏蔽，不出空穴[空穴:明本，统本，日刻本，张注本“空”并作“室”]之中，卒然病者，非不[不:《太素》卷二十八《诸风杂论》作“必”]离贼风邪气，其故何也?

Yellow Emperor said to Qibo:"You have said that when a man is injured by the evil wind, he will be sick. But someone contracts disease suddenly when he stays at home without leaving the screen, and he is not invaded by the evil wind. What is the reason?"

岐伯曰:此皆尝有所伤于湿气，藏于血脉之中，分肉之间，久留而不去;若有所堕坠，恶血在内而不去。卒然喜怒不节，饮食不适，寒温不时，腠理闭而不通。其开[其开:《甲乙》卷六第五无此二字]而遇风寒，则血气凝结，与故邪相袭，则为寒痹。其有热则汗出，汗出则受风，虽不遇贼风邪气，必有因加而发焉。

Qibo said: "It is due to the patient was injured by the wetness in the past, and the wetness evil retained in between the channels and the muscles which have not yet been removed; or the patient fell from a high place in the past to have stagnated blood in the body which has not yet been dissipated; or due to the patient has excessive overjoy or anger suddenly, has improper food or drink or encounters extreme cold or heat to cause the obstruction of the striae; or due to the patient encounters wind-cold when his striae are open causing the stagnation of the blood and energy. When the protracted wetness-evil combines with the new-contracted wind-cold, it will cause the hypochondriac protrusion due to cold. When the patient is hot, he will perspire, when wind invades during his perspiration, he will become sick. When the protracted evil joins the recent evil, it can cause disease even there is no thief-wind and evil-energy newly encountered."

黄帝日:今夫子之所言者，皆病人之所自知也。其毋所遇邪气，又毋怵惕之所[所:此“所”字疑衍]志，卒然而病者，其故何也?唯有因鬼神之事乎?

Yellow Emperor said:"What you have said is reasonable and can be comprehended by the patient. But there is the condition when no evil-energy of the four seasons is encountered, and no stimulation of fright occurs, but the patient falls sick all of a sudden, and what is the reason?" It is really the gods and the ghosts who are making the troubles?"

岐伯日:此亦有故邪留而未发，因而志有所恶，及有所慕，血气内乱，两气相搏。其所从来者微，视之不见，听而不闻，故似鬼神。

Qibo said:"This is because the patient has protracted evil retained in the body which has not yet bursted out, or he might have something detestable or something admirable in his heart causing his blood and energy confusing. Since the protracted evil and the recent evil energies are combating, disease will occur suddenly. As the reason of the disease is quite subtle, one can hardly see and hear anything related,so, it is like the gods and the ghosts are making the troubles."

黄帝日:其祝[其祝:《甲乙》卷六第五作“其由祝由”]而已者，其故何也?岐伯曰:先巫者，因[因:《太素》卷二十八《诸风杂论》作“固”]知百病之胜，先知其病知所从生者，可祝[可祝:“祝”下脱“由”字]而已也。

Yellow Emperor asked: "Some diseases can be cured by talisman and incantation, and what is the reason?" Qibo said:"The witch doctor in ancient times actually knew the various diseases were conditioning each other. So, one must know the reason of the disease in advance, then can he cure the disease with talisman and incantation."
