(The Edema)

黄帝问于岐伯曰:水与肤胀、鼓胀、肠覃、石瘕、石水[石水:“石水”二字是衍文]，何以别之。岐伯答曰:水始起也，目窠上微肿，如新卧起之状，其颈脉动，时咳，阴股间寒，足胫瘇[瘇:藏本与注本并作“肿”]，腹乃大，其水已成矣。以手按其腹，随手而起，如裹水之状，此其候也。

Yellow Emperor asked Qibo:"How to distinguish the edema, anasarca, distention of abdomen, intestinal mass and stony mass of uterus?” Qibo said: “In the initiation of edema, it appears on one's eyelid to be somewhat dropsy as if he has just awoke from sleep, his Renying pulse on the neck pulsates rapidly, he coughs frequently, he feels cold in the inner side of the thigh and has edema in the leg, if his abdomen is expanding, then, his edema has been formed. When one presses the swelling site with hand and then relieves the hand, the abdomen swells up in the wake of it, as if water is wrapped inside. These are the symptoms of edema."

黄帝曰:肤胀何以候之?岐伯曰:肤胀者，寒气客于皮肤之间，塾鼙然不坚，腹大，身尽肿，皮厚，按其腹，窅[窅:《甲乙》卷八第四作“腹陷”]而不起，腹色不变，此其候也。

鼓胀何如?岐伯曰:腹胀身皆大[腹胀身皆大:《甲乙》卷巻八第四作“腹身皆肿大”]，大[大:“大”字衍]与肤胀等也，色苍黄，腹筋起，此其候也。

Yellow Emperor asked:"What are the symptoms of the distention of abdomen?" Qibo said: "When the patient's abdomen is distending and full, the whole body is swelling and expanding like that in anasarca, the skin is green and yellow and the vessels on the abdomen are swelling up abruptly, they are the symptoms of abdominal distention."

肠覃何如?岐伯日:寒气客于肠外，与卫气相搏，气[气:《甲乙》卷八第四“气”上并有“正”字]不得荣[荣:《太素》卷二十九《胀论》作“营”]，因有所系，癖而内著，恶气乃起，瘜肉乃生，其始生[生:“生”字衍]也，大如鸡卵，稍以益大，至其成如怀子之状，久者离岁，按之则坚，推之则移，月事以时下，此其候也。

Yellow Emperor asked:"What are the symptoms of the intestinal mass?" Qibo said:"When the cold-energy retains outside of the intestine to combat with the Wei-energy, it causes the healthy energy fails to operate normally. As the cold-energy and the Wei-energy are connecting and can not be dispersed, the abdominal mass will be formed gradually inside, the filthy energy will begin to arise, the polypus will begin to grow, at the beginning, it is only in the size of an egg, but it becomes larger and larger gradually, when the disease has shaped, the patient is like a pregnant woman and the course of the disease will last for several years, when press it with hand, it is firm and hard, when push it with hand, it is somewhat movable, but the menstruation of the patient comes on schedual. These are the symptoms of the intestinal mass."

石瘕何如?岐伯曰:石瘕生胞中寒，寒气客于子门[门:《千金》卷二十一第四作“宫”]，子门闭塞，气不得通，恶血当泻不泻，衃以[衃以:《甲乙》卷八第四作“血衃乃”]留止，日以益大，状如怀子，月事不以时下。皆生于女子，可导而下。

Yellow Emperor asked:"What are the symptoms of the stony mass of uterus?" Qibo said:"The stony mass of uterus grows in the uterus. 黄帝日:肤胀鼓胀可刺邪?岐伯日:先泻[泻:《太素》卷二十九《胀论》并作“刺”]其胀[胀:《太素》卷二十九《胀论》并作“腹”]之血络，后调其经，刺去[去:“去”字衍]其血络[络:《太素》卷二十九《胀论》并作“脉”]也。

Yellow Emperor asked: "Can the anasarca and the distention of abdomen be treated with pricking?"
