(Branches of the Twelve Channels)

黄帝问于岐伯日:余闻人之合于天道[天道:《甲乙》卷二第一下“道”作“地”]也，内有五脏，以应五音五色五时五味五位也;外有六腑，以应六律，六律建阴阳诸经而合之十二月、十二辰、十二节、十二经水、十二时、十二经脉者，此五脏六腑之所以应天道。夫十二经脉者，人之所以生，病之所以成，人之所以治，病之所以起，学之所始，工之所止也，粗之所易，上之所难也。请问其离合出人奈何?岐伯稽首再拜日:明乎哉问也!此粗之所过，上之所息也，请卒言之。

Yellow Emperor asked Qibo: "I am told the human body agrees with the natural world; the five solid organs of Yin correspond to the five tones, five colours, five seasons, five tastes and the five orientations respectively inside, and the rule of the six hollow organs of Yang correspond to the six-rule of music of Yang outside, and the established of the six music-rule is pertaining to Yang. The channels coordinate with the twelve months, twelve branches of the duodecimal cycle, twelve solar terms, twelve rivers, twelve two-hour periods and the twelve channels. These are the general conditions of the five solid organs and the six hollow organs to adapt the phenomena of the natural world, the twelve-channel is the passage of the flowing of the blood and energy in human body, it has close relation with the existence of man, the forming of disease, the human health and the recovery of disease. For a beginner of treating the disease, he must learn the theory of the channel, and for a good physician, he must also take good attention to it. A physician of lower level thinks the theory of channel is easy to learn, but a physician of higher level deems that the study of it can hardly be proficient. Now, I want to know what is the condition of the divorce and combine of the channel branch, in human body, can you tell me all about it?" Qibo bowed respectively and said: "What a brilliant question you have asked! The condition of channel is what the imprudent physician neglects and what an astute physician studies carefully. Now, let me tell you in details.

足太阳之正，别人于国中，其一道下尻五寸，别入于肛，属于膀胱，散之肾，循膂当心入散;直者，从膂上出于项，复属于太阳，此为一经也。足少阴之正，至国中，别走太阳而合，上至肾，当十四倾，出属带脉;直者，系舌本，复出于项，合于太阳，此为一合。成以[成以诸阴之别，皆为正也:《甲乙》卷二第一下无“成以”十字]诸阴以之别，皆为正也。

"The main channel-branch of the Foot Taiyang Channel of Bladder separates from the popliteal fossa of a man,the channel branch descends to reach five inches below the sacrococcygeal region, enters into the anus and the inside of the abdomen to connect the hollow organ of bladder of its same channel and spreads on the kidney, then ascends along the inside of the spine and scatters by thc position of the heart; another channel branch of the Foot Taiyang Channel runs straightly forward, ascends from the spine to reach the top of head, then connects its same channel of Foot Taiyang.

The main channel-branch of from the Foot Shaoyin Channel of Kidney starts from the popliteal fossa and connects the Foot Taiyang Channel, then ascends to the kidney and connects the Belt Channel at the location of the fourteenth vertabra; the other channel-branch off from Foot Shaoyin, runs straightly forward to link the root of tongue, comes out from the neck and connects the Foot Taiyang Channel of Bladder.  This is the first coordination of the colocation of the superficies and interior of the Foot Taiyang Channel and the Foot Shaoyin Channel.

足少阳之正，绕髀入毛际，合于厥阴;别者，入季胁之间，循胸里属胆，散之上[散之上:丹波元简曰:“上”字衍]肝，贯心，以[以:《太素》卷九《经脉正别》杨注无“以”字]上挟咽，出顾颔中，散于面，系目系，合少阳于[于:张注本“于”下有“目”字]外眦也。足厥阴之正，别跗上，上至毛际，合于少阳，与别俱行，此为二合也。

"The main channel-branch of the Foot Shaoyang Channel of Gallbladder separates and winds the thigh, enters into the pubic hair margin and connects the Foot Jueyin Channel of Liver. Another channel-branch enters into the soft ribs on the lateral side of the chest, runs along the chest and connects the hollow organ of gallbladder of its same channel, then scatters on the liver, passes the heart, presses close to the throat, comes out from the location between the cheek and the chin, spreads on the face, links the ocular connectors and connects the Foot Shaoyang Channel of Gallbladder at the outer canthus. The main channel-branch of the Foot Jueyin Channel of Liver, separates from the dorsum of the foot, ascends to reach the pubic hair margin and connects the Foot Shaoyang Channel of Gallbladder and runs along with the other main channel-branch of the Gallbladder Channel. This is the second coordination of the colocation of the superficies and interior of Foot Shaoyang Channel and the Foot Jueyin Channel.
