黄帝:脾病而四支不用何也?岐伯曰：四支皆禀气于胃，而不得至经[《太素》作“径至”，“径”有“直”义]，必因于脾，乃得禀也。今脾病不能为胃行其津[读本、赵本、吴本“津”并作“精”]液，四支不得禀水谷气，气[元残一、赵本、吴本、明抄本“日”上并无“气”字]日以衰，脉道不利[《甲乙》“利”作“通”]，筋骨肌肉，皆无气以生，故不用焉。

Yellow Emperor asked; "The four limbs can not move normally when the spleen is ill, and what is the reason?" Qibo said: "All the four limbs are nourished by the stomach-energy, but the stomach-energy can not reach the four limbs directly. The essence of water and cereals can only reach the four limbs after being converted by the spleen. Now, since the

spleen is ill, the essence of water and cereals of stomach can no more be sent to the four limbs, and they will become weaker and weaker day after day. As the channels are obstructed, the patient's tendons, bones and muscles can not be enriched due to malnourishment, the four limbs will not be able to move normally."

帝曰：脾不主时何[《太素》“脾”下有“之”字]也?岐伯曰：脾者土也，治中央[《甲乙》作“土者中央”]，常以四时长四藏，各十八日寄治，不得独主于时也。脾藏者常著胃[《太素》作“脾藏有常著”，按“者”作“有”似误，本句应作“脾藏者，常著土之精也”]土之精也，土者生[《太素》“生”作“主”]万物而法天地，故上下至头足，不得主时也。

Yellow Emperor asked: "What is the reason that the spleen can not dominate a single season specifically?" Qibo said:" The spleen associates to earth and locates at the centrality. As it associates to earth, it symbolizes the earth-energy to promote the growth of all living things; as it locates at the centrality, it spreads the body fluid to nourish the other four viscera. In all the four seasons, the four viscera depend on the spleen to get nourishments, so, at the end of each of the four seasons, there are eighteen days out of the ninty days for the spleen to become prosperous and dominating, and thus, the spleen does not dominate an individual season. As the spleen often activates the body fluid for the stomach and nourish the four limbs and bones of the body, it takes effect on the head, foot and everywhere of the body, like the heaven and earth producing and promoting the growth of everything, it does not dominate an individual season specifically."

帝曰：脾与胃以膜相连耳，而能为之行其津液何也?岐伯曰：足太阴者三阴也，其脉贯胃属脾络嗌，故太阴为之行气于三阴。阳明者表也，五藏六府之海也，亦为之行气于三阳。藏府各因其经而受气于阳明，故为胃行其津液，四支不得禀水谷气[丹波元坚说“四支”以下二十八字与上文复，正是衍文]，日以益衰，阴道不利，筋骨肌肉无气以生，故不用焉。

Yellow Emperor asked: "Since there is only a piece of membrane connecting the spleen and the stomach, how can the spleen transport the body fluid for the stomach?" Qibo said: “The Foot Taiyin Channel of Spleen which is the third Yin whose channel is surrounding the stomach, connecting the spleen and clipping the throat, so, the Yangming energy can be transported by the Taiyin Channel, and makes it enter into the three Yin channels of Hand and Foot; the Foot Yangming Channel of stomach is the superficies of the Foot Taiyin Channel of spleen and is also the sea of nutrition of the five solid organs and the six hollow organs, so, the Stomach Channel can also transport the energy of Taiyin into the three Yang channels of Hand and Foot. Since the five solid organs and the six hollow organs can all receive the essence of water and cereals of Yangming with the help of the Spleen Channel, so, the spleen is capable of transporting the body fluid for the stomach."
