Jing Mai Bie Lun

(Further Comments On Channel)

Yellow Emperor asked: "Since men live in different environments and labour in different extents with different moods, will their channels, blood and energies change along with different situations?" Qibo answered: “The channel, blood and energy of a man will be affected and changed by terror, fright, anger, fatigue, motion and stillness. So, when one travels at

night, fright will stem from the kidney, when the energy is over-abundant and moves rashly, it will hurt the lung. When one falls down, fright will stem from the liver, when the energy is over-abundant and moves rashly, it will hurt the spleen. When one is terrified greatly, terror will stem from the lung. When the energy is abundant and runs rashly, it will hurt the heart. If one wades across a river or falls, fright will stem from the kidney and stomach.

Under these situations, if one has a strong body, his energy can be dredged, and his sickness can be recovered, if his body is weak, the evil energy will hurt the body in the wake of it. So, when treating, one should examine whether the body of the patient is strong or weak, and the appearance of his skin and muscle to know where the disease stems from, and this is

the method of diagnosing a disease.

"Therefore, when one eats too much, his stomach will certainly be hurt. When one is frightened, his heart will certainly be hurt. When one carries a heavy thing and travels far, his kidney will certainly be hurt. When one is walking rapidly with terror, his liver will certainly be hurt. When one waves with fatigue, his spleen will certainly be hurt.

"So, during the variations of Yin and Yang in the four seasons of spring, autumn, winter and summer, most diseases are certainly due to the excessiveness of physical labour, food and drink, fatigue and the consumption of spirit.

When the food enters into the stomach, after being digested, part of it which is the refined substance is transported to the liver to moisture the tendons of the whole body.

"Another part of it which is the essential substance from cereals is poured into the spleen and being soaked into the channel and blood.

"The channel-energy circulates in the channels and goes up to the lung. After the various channel-energies being converged in the lung, they are transported to the skin and hair.

"When the channel-energy and the refined energy combines, it flows into the six hollow organs, and the body fluids of the six hollow organs flow to the heart, liver, spleen and kidney,

"The spreading of the refined energy depends on the lung, and the condition of the lung is expressed on the pulse of Cunkou. One can distinguish whether the patient's disease is curable or not according to the pulse condition of Cunkou.
