The following sections provide the names of some standards and file formats that have been developed for terminology exchange. Most of them are incorporated into SALT (Standards-based Access service to multilingual Lexicons and Terminologies), a consortium of academic, governmental and commercial groups. The members of SALT are testing, refining, and implementing a universal format for leveraging both human-oriented terminology resources and machine translation lexicons for application in integrated localization environments where a variety of tools and approaches are being used, e.g. computer aided human translation, translation memory, machine translation, and various other localization tools.

2.1 MARTIF

The MAchine-Readable Terminology Interchange Format (MARTIF), is an international standard (ISO 12200) for human-oriented terminology interchange. It is an SGML-based method for exchanging and sharing terminological information between concept-

oriented termbase systems.

2.2 OLIF

The Open Lexicon Interchange Format (OLIF) is a format developed within the European OTELO project for machine-translation dictionary interchange. In addition to dealing with these so-called lexbases, i.e. primarily word-based machine-translation lexicons, OLIF also facilitates access to more traditional termbase systems, but without accommodating the complex hierarchical structures allowed by MARTIF.

2.3 TBX

TBX (TermBase Exchange) is a project of LISA's OSCAR group and will provide a standard exchange format featuring a LISA subset of ISO 12620, which provides an exhaustive list of terminological data categories, plus a declared structure designed to facilitate so-called "blind" interchange among LISA partners. TBX is an XML environment and will function as a subset of the SALT family of interchange standards.
