由以上可以看出，转换为汉语定语的大多是位于句首的介词短语状语，另外，当句中的副词转换为汉语形容词时，状语也就自然转换为汉语定语了。

(三）转换为补语

英语的状语大体上与汉语的状语或补语相当。因此，英语句中修饰动词和形容词的状语难于译成汉语的相应状语时，可以转换为汉语的补语，这在修辞上往往是很必要时。例如：

人体的神经系统复杂得不可想象。

13. Lenin was born on April 22, 1870.

列宁诞生于1870年4月22日。

14. The nuclear explosive is much more powerful than TNT.
