在翻译中，英语句子的谓语一般不需特殊处理。谓语的语序基本上可保持在相应的位置上而不用改变。只是在某些情况下，英语句子的谓语可以转换为汉语的主语、定语、偶或状语。以下的各译例就分别说明了这些转换。

1. Sea water contains about 3.5 percent salt.

海水中盐的含量约为3.5%。

2. Peniciliin works by not allowing a bacterium to build its cell wall.

青霉素的作用在于阻止细菌制造细胞壁。

3. An element may be defined as any substance that can not be broken down into simpler structures.

元素的定义就是不能再分解成更简单结构的任何物质。

4. A sketch serves to express one's idea graphically.

草图的作用就是把人们的想法用图表示出来。

在以上几例中，英语句中的谓语均已转换为汉语的主语。这实际上就是把英语动词转译成汉语名词了。

5. The sun produces in three days more heat than all earth fuels could ever produce.

太阳在三天内发出的热童就比地球上所有燃料发出的热量还要多。（转换为定语）

6. For the first time in the annals of space , a piloted ship had succeeded in launching an earth satellite.

载人飞船成功地发射了一颗人造地球卫星，这在航天史上尚属首次。(转换为状语）

7. In the past decade the engineering design of jet engines has continued to advance very rapidly.

在过去的十年间，喷气发动机的工艺设计在持续地高速发展。（同上）
