五、代动词的重译

英语中有一个代动词do，用途极广，常用来代替上文（一般在同一句中）出现过的动词或动词及有关成分，翻译时一般都需将其重复译为所代替的动词，以使表达鲜明具体。请看以下几例。

19. It takes more power to do a job in two minutes than it does to do the same job in two hours.

两分钟做一件事所需的功率大于两小时做同一件事所需的功率。（注意本句中有三个do，其中第一个和第三个do为实义动词，作“做”解；第二个do(does)才是代动词）

20. The guided missiles are used to solve one of the most important problems of the modern battlefield：hit a moving target at longer and longer ranges and do it with the first shot.

导弹用来解决现代战场上最重要的问题之一——命中很远距离的活动目标，而且要首发命中。

21. One day soon, man will walk on the ocean floor as they do on the street.

不久，人们将在海底漫步，就象现在在大街上漫步一样。

六、代词重译中的两个特殊情况

在代词的重译中，有两种特殊的情况应予注意，现分述如下；

1. 虽然往往需要把代词重译为其所代替的名词，但在实际翻译中为了避免译文出现过多的重复，有时却需要在把代词重译为名词的同时，把代词所代替的名词简译为汉语的代词或减去不译。这和以上举出的例子是不一样的。以下的译例就采用了这种译法。

22. The airborne sound damping effect of single shell wmduws is slight because of their low weight.

由于单层窗户的重量轻，所以对空气声的消音作用很小。(物主代词their重译，而它所代替的名词single… windows则减去不译）

23. The lasers will be capable of destroying planes aad missiles within seconds of their being launched.

这些激光器能够在飞机起飞和导弹发射后的几秒钟内将它们摧毁。（物主代词their重译，而它所代替的名词 planes and missiles 则简译为“它们”）
