英语中代词的使用远比汉语广泛，英美人认为，使用代词是避免名词重复、实现语言经济的一种手段。因此，英语中几乎每一句话都可以碰到这样或那样的代词，用以指代前已提到过的某一事物或概念。但我们汉语中却较少使用代词。因此，翻译时往往需要把英语代词所指代的事物或概念重复译出（或干脆将代词减去不译，以使译文清楚具体，不致产生歧义和张冠李戴的现象。英语代词多达八、九种，我们这里只讨论常需重译的几种。

一、人称代词的重译

人称代词的重译，以it和they两个最为多见，试看以下各例。

1. Ocean do not so much divide the world as unite it.

与其说海洋分隔了世界，不如说海洋连结了世界。

2. The pressure is less in the small arteries，because they are more remote from the heart.

小动脉中压力较小，因为这些小动妹离心脏较远。

3. Phenylbutazone is not used to remedy duodenal uLcer f because it wiU aggravate

保泰松类药不能用来治疗十二指肠溃疡，因为它会使溃 疡加重。

4. Electrical inventors who followed Edison did not have to experiment with the substance which he had found would not worked.

爱迪生之后的电器发明家们不必再对爱迪生已经发现是不管用的材料进行试验了。

5. If all the offspring of one bacterium could go on reproducing for twelve hours, there would be seven million of them.

如果一个细菌的所有后代都继续繁殖，那么，12小时后就会有七百万个细菌。

6. Since 1945 there have been at least 130 conflicts that would qualify as wars, nearly all of them fought on the soil of poor nations with weapons purchased from rich ones.

自1945年以来，至少巳经发生了一百三十次可以算是战争的冲突，而几乎所有这些冲突，都是用富国出售的武器在穷国的土地上进行的。（本句中的不定代词one亦重复译出，下文还要述及）

二、物主代词的重译

在物主代词的重译中，以its和their两个最为多见。例如：

7. X-rays have the same nature as visible light, but their wavelength is much less.

X射线与可见光的性质相同，但X射线的波长要短得多。
