科技语域泛指一切论及科学和技术的书面语和口语，语域层次多、范围广。

韩礼德系统功能语法理论认为:决定语言特征的三太语境因素是语场（field of discourse)、语旨（tenor of discourse)和语式（mode of discourse)。语场指谈话题 材或话语的范围;语旨指讲话者之间的关系.即角色关系、角色地位等;语式指交际的渠道、媒介，如口头语或书面语、自然语或人工语等。语境的这三大因素中任何一项的变化，都会引起 交流意义的变化，从而引起语言的变异或文体的变化，产生不同类型的语域。据此，可将科技语域分为六个层次、两个类别。每个类别和层次的语言变体都有其语域特征： 

 

 

 

之所以将科技语域划分为六个层次、两种类别只是为了便于研究问题和说明问题。实际上每一个层次包含不同类型的语篇.根据不同的语篇特征还可进一步细分。此外，文体的正式 程度是一个连续体，很难全然区别开来。表中分成六级也是相对而言的。如F层次的科普读物和中小学课本，按文体学的一般标准划分，有的说理性较强的语篇正式程度也不算低，应列入正式文体，比起商议性文体、随意文体等都要高。

 

以下就专用科技文体(A，B，C三层次)和普通科技文体(D,E,F三层次)分类叙述之。先将同一内容的两类文体进行初步比较。普通科技英语表述为：

Food is digested as it passes along the long tube which begins at the mouth and ends at the anus. The process of digestion begins in the mouth where the food is crushed by the teeth and made wet by the juices in the mouth. After it is swallowed ,it passes down the gullet, a tube having muscles and going to the stomach.

 

同一个意思,用专用科技英语可表述如下：

Food is digested as it passes along the alimentary canal. The process of digestion begins in the mouth where the food is chewed and moistened by the saliva. After being swallowed, it passes down the gullet, a muscular tube leading to the stomach.

 

两相对比，词汇和句法上的差异是明显的。专用科技英语用术语来表达概念，而普通科技英语常用解释性的文字来表示，见下表：
