二、定冠词
定冠词the可与单数或复数名词连用，表示特指的“某一个”或“某一些”人或物。定冠词the在一般情况下可以省略不译，但在指称不明或容易与其他事物混淆的情况下需要译出“这(些）”/那(些）”“该”等。例如：
The germs are found in the waste removed from the body.
[原译]病菌是在身体排出的废物中发现的。
[改译]这些病菌是在身体排出的废物中发现的。
[说明]中的the germs是特指某些病菌，而不是泛指一般病菌，因此必须把冠词译出，否则就产生逻辑上的错误。
定冠词译法举例(注意下列句中定冠词必须译出和可以省略不译的情况）：
16. They decided to study the complicated nervous relations of higher animals to the outside world.
他们决定研究髙等动物的神经与外界的复杂关系。
17. Many people believe that the disease is caused by a virus.
许多人认为,此病由一种病毒所引起。
18. The symptoms caused by the virus are relatively mild.
这神病毒所引起的症状较轻.
19. The spleen is a solid organ about the same size as the kidney.
脾为大小与肾相似的实质性器官，
[说明]医学英语的器官名称前一般都用定冠词,均可不译。
20. The drug is efficacious in cases of fever.
此药对治疗发烧是很有效的。
21. The figure is well within the normal range.
这个数字完全在正常范围之内.
