Over the past one hundred years, Fudan University, while holding high the banners of patriotism, progress, democracy and science, has played an active role in helping promote China's modernization drive. The university's motto " To pursue a wide scope oflearning while sticking to one's chosen aspiration, and to raise questions earnestly and think in connection with the present situation, "which is taken from The Analects of Confucius, has been instrumental in nurturing the university's unique academic tradition and environment. As a result, numerous talented scholars and scientists with lofty aspirations have been produced by the university in different decades, and many of them have turned out to be the pillars of China's grand cause of sociaiist construction .
