与表述时间联系最密切的词便是介词，如 on，after，before，by等等。在普通英语里面运用介词来表示时间也许不是很困难的事，但在法律文书中使用这些介词却复杂得多，因为法律文书中的时间表述要求很准确，翻译的时候要注意所提到的日期是否包括在内，以避免产生歧义。

例1：你已被本法院传唤，请于接到本传票之日起20日内到本院出庭。

原译：You are summoned to appear in the Court within 20 days from the service of this summons.

改译：You are summoned to appear and answer this action in the Court named above by filing an Answer along with the required answer fee with twenty (20) consecutive days from the service of this summons, not including the days of service. 译文解析：改译后的句子显然优于原译，因为改译的句子中的20日不仅用twenty days而且同时用数字20。表述，以避免这一关键性的日期被轻易涂改，更值得一提的是译者对一些可能产生的争议做了明确界定，如20日这一期限是否包括本日，如果第20日是节假日怎么办。一般说来，如果要完成一项行动时段的最后一天正好是星期六或星期日，那一天就不计算在内，那项行动可以在下一个工作日或营业日完成。

诉讼翻译中，关于时间概念的介词比较分析：

(1）after不包括所提到的日子。

(2）before不包括所提到的日子。

(3）on一词被解释为包括所指的日期。短语on and after和 on and from经常连用。

在某一天有时也用on or about 这个短语。

例2: Authorities suspect the victim was slain on or about September 15.

(4）by这个词表示到某一日期履行的行为可在该日之前或者甚至在当日履行。

例3: A clause in the agreement provides that the tenant shall vacate the premises by June 30, 2008 (the expiration date of the lease).

参考译文：协议中有一款规定，承租人须在2008年6月30号（租约到期日）前离开租用的房屋。例句中用的by表示承租人可在6月30号之前离开，也可在6月30号当天离开。
