副市长现有两种译法：vice mayor或deputy mayor。笔者以为，根据我国职位等级，结合vice与deputy的语用习惯，最好舍前取后。副书记通常被译为 deputy secretary，但汉语的“书记”与英语的secretary（秘书）所表达的意思相差甚远。严格地讲，我们通常所说的“副书记”乃党组副书记，所以最好釆用增译法，译为deputy Party secretary。对图书馆副馆长的译法较多，常见的宵deputy chief librarian , deputy librarian, associate librarian , sub-librarian。尽管后三种形式在 某些英语国家不无此说，但为了统一起见，在我国最好以第一种为规范英译。

随着工商企业管理的现代科学化，这些单位的“副”职也可以参照行政事业单位的“副”职进行英译。如：一般公司的副经理是deputy manager;副总经理是 deputy manager-general;大堂副理是 deputy lobby manager。

2.3 用 associate

associate意为“同伙”、“同伴”、“同事”，主要用于表示专业技术职称中的“副”职。如：副教授 associate professor ；副研究员 associate research fellow。有人把副研究员译为associate professor,似与副教授分别不清。图书馆系列副研究馆员 associate research fellow of library science;档案系列副研究馆员 associate research fellow of archives science;文物博物系列副研究馆员 associate research fellow of relics and museology;副主任医师 associate chief physician;副主任药师 associate senior pharmacist；副主任护师 associate senior nurse;副主任技师 associate senior technologist;虽!|编审 associate senior editor;畐lj译审 associate senior translator。

另外，associate也可用于表示其他少数几个行业中的副职，如associate director可以表示学术研究中心、考试中心、影剧院、基金会、信息情报等部门的副主任、副院长、副会长等。如“教育中心副主任”可译为associate director of tbe center for education; “国家剧院副院长”可译为 associate director of the national theater;“信息服务部副主任”可译为 associate director of information services; “法院的副审判长”多译为associate chief judge。

2. 4 用 assistant

assistant意为“助手”、“助理”。它可以代替deputy表示军队、执法和企业部门的某些“ 副” 职。如：副司令 assistant commander；副检察长 assistant attorney general;小部门的副经理 assistant manager。

2. 5 用 sub- 

sub-有“次要”、“下级”、“副的”之意。它通常表示下列“副”职；副县长和城市副区长subprefect；副代表subdelegale；小部门的副主席subchairman；副主任、副科长subhead ；副代理人suhagent。

总之，我们在翻译国内职务、职称时不仅要顺应国际习惯，而且要尽量让外国人基本弄懂。
