帝日:其间日而作者何也?岐伯日:其气之[《圣济总录》引“之”下有“所”字]舍深，内薄于阴，阳气独发，阴邪内著，阴与阳争不得出，是以间日而作也。

Yellow Emperor asked:"Some of the malaria disease attack every other day, and why is it?" Qibo said: "It is because the situation of the evil-energy is rather deep for to approach the Yin energy which is inside, so the Yang energy can only operate outside all by itself, and the malarial-evil will still be retained inside. As the evil-energy can not be dispersed after the contention between Yin and Yang, so, the disease can only attack every other day."

帝日:善。其作日晏与其日早者，何气使然?岐伯日:邪气客于风府，循脊而下，卫气一日一夜大会于风府，其明日[《病源》“日”下不叠“日”字]日下一节，故其作也晏[《病源》“作”下无“也晏此先客于脊背也每止于风府”十四字]，此先客于脊背也。每至于风府，则腠理开，媵理开则邪气入，邪气入则病作，以此日作稍益晏[《病源》、《外台》“以此所”作“此所以”。孙鼎宜说:“‘稍’字疑衍”]也。其出于风府[《病源》作“卫气之行风府”]，日下一节[《太素》“节”作“椎”]，二十五日下至骶骨;二十六日入于脊内，注于伏膂之脉[周本“注”下无“于”字，《甲乙》“伏脊”作“太冲”];其气上行[《病源》作“伏冲脉其行”]，九日出于缺盆之中。其气日高[《病源》“日高”作“即上”]，故作日益早也[《病源》作“故其病稍早发”]。其间日发者，由邪气内薄于五藏，横连募原也。其道远，其气深，其行迟，不能与卫气俱行，不得皆出[《太平圣惠方》引无“俱行不得”四字作“不能与卫气皆出”]，故间日乃作也。

Yellow Emperor said: "Good. Some of the malaria diseases attack earlier day after day, and some of them attack later day after day. What is the reason?" Qibo said:"After the invasion of the evil-energy to the Fengfu (Wind Mansion) point. it shifts downwards along the vertebrae one after another; the Wei-energy often meet the evil-energy at the Fengfu point by taking a day and night time, as the Wei-energy shifts a vertebra downwards each day, thus. the meeting of the evil-energy and the Wei-energy will be later day after day, and the time of the disease-attack will be later day after day also. This is the condition when the evil-energy resides in the spine. Whenever the Wei-energy reaches the Fengfu point, the striae of skin will open, the evil-energy will take advantage to invade and the disease will break out, this is the reason why the disease breaks out later day after day. When the Wei-energy operates in the Fengfu point, the evil-energy will shift down for a vertebra daily, it reaches the sacral bone below on the twenty-fifth day, reaches the inner side of the spine and pour into the Taichong Chennel on the twenty sixth day, and then it goes up along the Taichong Channel and reaches the Tiantu (Sky Prominence) point of the Ren Channel on the ninth day of ascent. As the evil energy is going upwards and drawing nearer and nearer, it will join the Wei-energy earlier day after day, and the attack of the disease is earlier day after day. As to the case of attacking on every other day, it is due to the evil-energy coercing the viscera inside and connecting the membrane of the diaphram,ie., the zone under the navel, since the distance is comparatively far, the penetration is comparatively deep, and its operation is comparatively slow, it can not come out along with the Wei-energy on the same day, thus, it attacks every other day."
