(Dysphonia due to Melancholy and Resentment)

黄帝问于少师日:人之卒然忧恚而言无音者，何道之塞，何气出[出:《甲乙》卷十二第二作“不”]行，使音不彰?愿闻其方。少师答曰:咽喉[喉:按:“喉”字涉下衍]者，水谷之道也。喉咙者，气之所以上下者也。会厌者，音声之户也。口唇[口唇:《灵枢略无音论篇》“唇”上无“口”字]者，音声之扇也。舌者，音声之机也。悬雍垂者，音声之关也。颃颡者，分气之所泄也。横骨者，神气所使，主发舌者也。故人之鼻洞涕出不收者，颃颡不开[开:《甲乙》卷十二第二《灵枢略・无音论篇》并作“闭”]，分气失也。是故厌小而疾薄[是故厌小而疾薄:《甲乙》卷十二第二“是故”作“其”，“而”下无“疾”字]，则发气疾，其开阖利，其出气易;其厌大而厚，则开阖难，其气出迟，故重言也[故重言也:《甲乙》巻十二第二“言也”下有“所谓吃者，其言逆，故重之”十字]。人卒然无音者，寒气客于厌，则厌不能发，发不能下至[发不能下至:《灵枢略・无音论篇》无“下”字，“至”下有“其机扇”三字]，其开阖不致[其开阖不致:《甲乙》卷十二第三作“机扇开阖不利”]，故无音。

Yellow Emperor asked Shaoshi and said:"When one has dysphonia suddendly due to melancholy and resentment, the routes of energy and blood are obstructed, and the voice fails to be loud and clear, what energy obstructs it? I hope to hear the reason." Shaoshi said:"The pharynx is the passage for water and cereals to enter into the stomach, the throat is for the breath to go up and down and in and out, the epiglottis is like the window for sending out the voice, the lips are like the door of giving off the voice, the tongue is like the organ that produces the voice, the uvula is like the pass of the voice, the upper orifice of the palate is to divide the breath to go to the mouth and nose respectively, the palate which is controlled by the nerve is for dominating the tongue to form language. Thus, when one has sinusities with unceasing nasal discharge, it is due to the upper orifice of the palate fails to close, and it can not divide the breath properly. When the epiglottis is small and thin, the coming out of the breath will be easy and swift, so, one will be brisk and neat in talking: if the epiglottis is large and thick, it will be difficult to open and close, the coming out of the breath will be low. and one will be stammer in talking. When one has dysphonia suddenly, it is due to the cold-evil attacks the epiglottis to work abnormally, when its opening and closing are ineffective, one will have dysphonia."

黄帝曰:刺之奈何?岐伯曰:足之少阴，上系于舌[舌:《甲乙》卷十二第二“舌”下有“本”字]，络于横骨，终于会厌。两泻其血脉，浊气乃辟。会厌之脉，上络任脉，取之天突，其厌乃发也。

Yellow Emperor asked: "How to treat dysphonia by pricking?" Qibo said: "The Foot Shaoyin Channel links the root of tongue above, it communicates the palate and terminates at the epiglottis. When one treats by purging the Foot Shaoyin Channel of Kidney and the Ren Channel respectively, the cold-evil and the turbid energy will be removed. As the channel of the epiglottis passes the Ren Channel above, when one pricks the Tiantu point further more, the voice will come out from the epiglottis."
