癫狂/Dian Kuang
(Mania-depressive Syndrome)
目眦外决于面者,为锐眦;在内近鼻者为内眦;上为外眦,下为内眦。
The eye-corner which is on the outer side of the face is called the outer canthus, the eyecorner which is nearing the nose is called the inner canthus. The outer canthus belongs to Yang and the inner canthus belongs to Yin.
癫疾始生,先不乐,头重痛,视举目赤,甚作极[甚作极:《甲乙》卷十一第二“甚”属上“赤”字之头,作“举目赤甚”],已而烦心,侯之于颜,取手太阳、阳明、太阴,血变而止。
In the beginnig of the dian disease (disorder of head), the patient appears to be unhappy, his head is heavy, his two eyes are red and stare straight forward. When the disease is severe, the patient will have the feeling of oppression over the chest and restless. When one examines the expression between the two eyes and the eyebows of the patient, he can predict the attack of the disease. When treating, prick the acupoints of the Hand Taiyang, Yangming and Taiyin channels, and cease the pricking after the colour of the patient's complexion has turned into normal.
癫疾始作,而引口啼呼喘悸者,侯之手阳明、太阳,左强者攻其右,右强者攻其左,血变而止。癫疾始作,先反僵,因而脊痛,侯之足太阳、阳明、太阴[阳明,大阴:《太素》卷三十《癫疾》无阳明,大阴]、手太阳,血变而止。
In the initiation of dian disease, the patient makes a crying sound in the mouth; one should examine and prick the acupoints along the Hand Yangming and Taiyang channels and apply contralateral insertion, when the left side is stiff, prick the right side; when the right side is stiff, prick the left side, and cease the pricking after the colour of the patient's complexion has turned into normal. In the initiation of dian disease, the patient's body is erect and stiff first like a bow bending in the adverse direction, then, he feels pain in the spine and the back. One should examnine and prick the acupoints along the Foot Taiyang Channel and that of the Hand Taiyang Channel, and cease the pricking after the colour of the patient's complexion has turned into normal.
治癫疾者,常与之居,察其所当取之处。病至,视之有过者泻之,置其血于瓠壶之中,至其发时,血独动矣。不动,灸穷骨二十壮。穷骨者,骶骨也,
When treating the patient with dian disease, the physician should often live with the patient together to find out which are the proper channels and acupoints for treating. When the disease attacks, let out the blood from the diseased channels and put the blood released into a gourd; when the disease attacks again, the blood in the gourd will be moving. If the blood in the gourd is not moving, apply moxibustion of twenty moxa-cones to the qiong bone which is also called the sacrum bone (the location of the Changqiang point).
骨癫疾者,顑、齿诸腧、分肉皆满而骨居,汗出烦悗。呕多沃沫,气下泄,不治。
In the depressive psychosis involving the bone, the patient will have the feeling of distention in the cheeks, teeth and the muscles between the shu-points, he will also have stiffness of the bones, perspiration and the feeling of oppression of the chest. If the patient vomits with plenty of saliva, it shows the kidney energy is purging, the disease can by no means to be cured.
筋癫疾者,身倦[倦:《太素》卷十三《癫疾》作“卷”]挛急大,刺项大经之大杼脉。呕多沃沫,气下泄,不治。
In the dian disease involving the tendon, the patient is tired with muscular stiffness and he has a gigantic pulse, The disease can be treated by pricking the Dazhu point behind the neck. If the patient vomits with plenty of saliva which shows the kidney energy is excreting, the disease can by no means to be cured.
脉癫疾者,暴仆,四肢之脉皆胀而纵。脉满,尽刺之出血;不满,灸之挟项太阳,灸带脉于腰相去三寸,诸分肉本输。呕多沃沫,气下泄,不治。
In the dian disease involving the channel, the patient may suddenly fall down during the onset of the disease; the vessels in the four extremities are swelling and loose; if the vessels are swelling and full, it should be pricked to let out the blood; if the vessels are not swelling and full, it can be treated by applying moxibustion to the Foot Taiyang Channel clipping the neck, and apply moxibustion to the acupoints three inches from the Belt Channel on the waist and the shu-points of the four extremities and between the muscles. If the patient vomits with plenty of white foams which shows the excreting of the energy, the disease can by no means to be cured.
癫疾者,疾发如狂者,死不治。
When one contracts the dian disease, if the onset of the disease is like mania, it can by no means to be cured.
狂始生,先自悲也,喜忘、苦[苦:《太素》卷三十《惊狂》作“喜”]怒、善恐者,得之忧饥,治之取[取:《甲乙》卷十一第二“取”上有“先”字]手太阴[太阴:统本、金陵本“太阴并作“太阳”]、阳明,血变而止,及取足太阴、阳明。狂始发,少卧不饥,自高贤也,自辩智也,自尊贵也,善骂署,日夜不休,治之取手阳明、太阳、太阴、舌下少阴,视之盛者,皆取之,不盛,释之也。
In the initiation of mania, the patient has the mood of sadness first, he is prone to forget, easy to get angry, apt to be frightened, and the disease is caused by melancholy and hunger. When treating, prick the acupoints of the Hand Taiyang Channel and that of the Hand Yangming Channel first and cease the pricking when the colour of the patient's complexion has turned into normal, then prick the acupoints on the Foot Taiyin Channel and that on the Foot Yangming Channel. In the beginnig of mania, the patient can hardly sleep, and he is not hungry, he considers himself as a brilliant and wise person, a smart talker, a talented and noble man, and he is fond of scolding others regardless day or night. When treating, prick the acupoints on the Hand Yangming, Taiyang and Taiyin channels and the acupoints on the Shaoyin Channel under the tongue. To the channels that are overabundant, they can all be pricked, to those which are not overabundant, they can be left alone.
