黄帝曰:夫经水之应经脉也，其远近浅深，水血之多少各不同，合而刺之奈何?岐伯答日:足阳明，五脏六腑之海也，其脉大血多，气盛热壮，刺此者不深弗散，不留不泻也。足阳明刺深六分，留十呼。足太阳深五分，留七呼。足少阳深四分，留五呼。足太阴深三分，留四呼。足少阴深二分，留三呼。足厥阴深一分，留二呼。手之阴阳，其受气之道近，其气之来疾，其刺深者皆无过二分，其留皆无过一呼。其少长大小肥瘦，以心擦之，命日法天之常。灸之亦然。灸而过此者得恶火，则骨枯脉涩;刺而过此者，则脱气。

Yellow Emperor asked:"The energy of channels corresponds with the channels of a man, but the conditions of the remote and near, shallow or deep and plenty or less in the energy and blood between them are different, how to do it when combining their conditions with the applying of the acupuncture therapy?" Qibo answered:"In the five solid organs and the six hollow organs, the Foot Yangming Channel of Stomach is like the sea among the twelve channels, it is the channel which has a large pulse, plenty of blood, abundant energy and intense heat. So, when pricking the channel, it must be pricked deeply, or else, the evil can not be dispelled; the needle must be retained, or else, the evil can not be purged. When pricking the Foot Yangming Channel, which has plenty of blood and energy , the depth of pricking should be six fen (0.6 inch), and the period of the needle retention should be of ten exhalations. When pricking the Foot Taiyang Channel, which has plenty of blood and little energy, the depth of the pricking should be five fen (half inch), and the period of the needle retention should be of seven exhalations. When pricking the Foot Shaoyang Channel which has plenty of blood and plenty of energy, the depth of the pricking should be four fen and the period of the needle retention should be of five exhalations. When pricking the Foot Taiyin Channel which has plenty of blood and little energy, the depth of the pricking should be three fen, and the period of the needle retention should be of four exhalations. When pricking the Foot Shaoyin Channel which has little blood and little energy, the depth of the pricking should be two fen, and the period of the needle retention should be of three exhalations. When pricking the Foot Jueyin Channel which has plenty of blood and little energy, the depth of the pricking should be one fen, and the period of the needle retention should be of two exhalations. As to the Hand channels of Yin and Yang, they are closer to the heart and the lung from which to receive the energy, and the energies flowing in them are faster, so, generally, the depth of the pricking should not exceed two fen, and the period of the needle retention should not exceed one exhalation; nevertheles, the patients are different in old and young, tall and short, and fat and thin, one must deliberate carefully to treat reasonably. When treating with moxibustion, it should be in the same way. When the moxibustion is excessive to injure the human body, it is called the evil fire which will cause the withering of the marrow and the stagnation of the blood. When the pricking is excessive, it will injure the healthy energy of the patient."

黄帝日:夫经脉之小大，血之多少，肤之厚薄，肉之坚脆，及用之大小，可为度量乎?岐伯答日:其可为度量者，取其中度也，不甚脱肉而血气不衰也。若失度之人，痛瘦而形肉脱者，恶可以度量刺乎。审切循扪按，视其寒温盛衰而调之，是谓因适而为之真也。

Yellow Emperor asked: "Is there any standard for measuring the plenty or less quantity of the blood, the thickness or the thinness of the skin the firmness or fragility of the muscle and the size of the protruding part of the muscle?" Qibo answered:"They can be measured when the patient is of a medium stature, not very emaciated in the muscle and his blood and his energy are not declined. As to the patient who is abnormal in size, very emaciated and his muscle is bogging down, one can only determine the depth of the pricking through inspection, palpating the Cunkou pulse, pressing the skin of anterolateral side of the forearm and massage the skin and the muscle, then treat accordingly after examining the cold and heat, asthenic and sthenic conditions of the patient. This is the so called treat prudently according to different cases by pricking."
