(The Beginning and End of the Channel)

岐伯曰:天地相感，寒暖相移，阴阳之道，孰少孰多?阴道偶，阳道奇。发于春夏，阴气少，阳气多，阴阳不调，何补何泻?发于秋冬，阳气少，阴气多，阴气盛而阳气衰，故茎叶枯槁，湿雨下归，阴阳相移，何泻何补?奇邪离经，不可胜数，不知根结，五脏六腑，折关败枢，开阖而走，阴阳大失，不可复取。九针之玄，要在终始，故能知终始，一言而毕，不知终始，针道咸绝。

Qibo said: "The energies of heaven and earth are correspondent with each other and the cold and hot weathers are shifting from one to another. It is hard to understand the rule of the Yin and Yang changes and know which is the deficient side with less energy and which is the abundant side with more energy. The number of Yin is even, and the number of Yang is odd. When one falls sick in spring and summer, the Yin energy is less and the Yang energy is more and the Yin and Yang energies are not in harmony, to this kind of disease, how to treat with purging and invigorating? When one falls sick in autumn and winter, the Yang energy is less and the Yin energy is more, and the Yin and Yang are interchanging, to this kind of disease, how to purge with purging and invigorating? When the unhealthy energy invades the channels and collaterals, the diseases occurred will be numerous, if one does not know the beginnig and end of the channels and acupoints, once the energy's mechanism is damaged, the pivot becomes deteriorated, the function of opening and closing is out of order, and the energy is excreted, the Yin and Yang will be greatly injured and the refined energy will not be able to be collected again.  As to the main point of applying the needles, it is in the comprehension of the beginning and end of the channel. When one knows the facts of the beginning and end of the channedl, the principle of acupuncture can be known by a few words. When one knows not the importance of them, the principle of acupuncture will become extinct to him.

太阳根[于至阴:《素问・阴阳离合论》“根”下有“起”字]于至阴，结于命门，命门者目也[命门者目也《太素》卷十《经脉根结》并无此五字]。阳明根于厉兑，结于颡大，颡大者钳耳也。少阳根于窍阴，结于窗笼，窗笼者耳中也。太阳为开[开:《太素》卷五《阴阳合》卷十《经脉根结》作“关”]，阳明为阖，少阳为枢。故开[故开折:“开”误，应作“关”]折则肉节渎而暴病起矣，故暴病者取之大阳，视有余不足，读者皮肉宛瞧而弱也。阖折则气无所止息而痿疾起矣，故痿疾者，取之阳明，视有余不足，无所止息者，真气稽留，邪气居之也。枢折即骨繇而不安于地，故骨繇者取之少阳，视有余不足，骨繇者，节缓而不收也，所谓骨繇者摇故也，当穷其本也。

"The Foot Taiyang Channel begins from the Zhiyin point (BL. 67) on the outer flank of the small toe, and ends at the Jingming point (BL.11) on the inner canthus of face.  The Foot Yangming Channel begins from the Lidui point (ST.45) at the tip of the second toe beside the big toe, and ends at Touwei point (ST.8) on the frontal eminence. The Foot Shaoyang Channel begins from the Qiaoyin point (GB.44) at the tip of the toe next to the small toe, and ends at the Tinggong point (SI. 19) on the ear. The Taiyang Channel in the body is like a bolt of the outer door, the Yangming Channel in the body is like the plank of the outer door, and the Shaoyang Channel in the body is like the pivot of the outer door. If the bolt of Taiyang fails to achieve its function of bolting the door, the sudden onset of disease due to the ulceration in the spaces of muscles will occur; thus, when treating the sudden onset of disease, the Foot Taiyang Channel of Bladder should be pricked, purge when it is having a surplus and invigorate when it is deficient according to the condition of the disease; the so called alternation means the emaciation of muscle and the withering of skin. If Yangming fails to achieve its function of closing the door, the Yang energy will rest nowhere and the flaccidity syndrome will occur; thus, when treating flaccidity, the Yangming Channel of Stomach should be pricked, purge when it is having a surplus and invigorate when it is deficient according to the condition of the disease: the so called rest in nowhere means when the healthy energy is impeded, the evil energy will be retained inside. If Shaoyang fails to achieve its function of pivoting the syndrome of wavering of the bone will occur and the patient can not walk on the ground safely, thus, when treating the syndrome of wavering of the bone, the Shaoyang Channel of Bladder should be pricked, purge when it is having a surplus and invigorate when it is deficient according to the condition of the disease: the so called wavering of the bone means the joints of bone can not be controlled due to flaccidity. One should probe the source of the conditions stated above.

太阴根于隐白[根:《素问▪阴阳离合论》“根”下有“起”字]，结于太仓。少阴根于涌泉，结于廉泉。厥阴根于大敦，结于玉英，络于膻中。太阴为开[开:应作“关”]，厥阴为阖，少阴为枢。故开[“开”应作“关”]折则仓廪无所输膈洞，膈洞者取之太阴，视有余不足，故开折者气不足而生病也。阖折即气绝而喜悲，悲[悲者:“悲”上脱“善”字，应据《甲乙》卷二第五补]者取之厥阴，视有余不足。枢折则脉有所结而不通，不通者取之少阴，视有余不足，有结者皆取之不足[皆取之不足:按“不足”衍，应据《甲乙》卷二第五删]。

"The Foot Taiyin Channel begins from the Yinbai point (SP. 1) at the inner tip of the big toe, and ends at Taicang point (Zhongwan RN 12) of the upper abdomen. The Foot Jueyin Channel begins from Dadun point (LR. I) at the outer tip of the big toe, and ends on the Yuying point (Yutang RN 18) and nets the Tanzhong point (RN 17) below. The Foot Shaoyin Channel begins from the Yongquan point (KI. 1) of the sole, and ends at the Lianquan point (RN 23) on the neck and throat. The Taiyin Channel in the body is like the bolt of the inner door, the Jueyin Channel in the body is like the flank of the inner door, and the Shaoyin Channel in the body is like the pivot of the inner door. If the Taiyin Channel fails to achieve its function of bolting the door, the spleen will be unable to convey and transform, the water and cereals will not be transported, and the syndromes of obstruction in chest and diarrhea will occur. The syndromes can be treated by pricking the acupoints on the Foot Taiyin Channel of Spleen, purge when it is having a surplus and invigorate when it is deficient according to the condition of the disease. The main reason of failing to bolt of the Taiyin Channel is due to the deficiency of energy. When the Jueyin Channel fails to achieve its function of closing, the retardation of the functional activities of vital energy will occur, the patient will often be sorrow stricken. The syndrome can be treated by pricking the acupoints on the Foot Jueyin Channel of Liver, purge when there is a surplus and invigorate when it is deficient according to the condition of the disease. When the Shaoyin Channel fails to achieve its function of pivoting, the kidney channel will be stagnated and obstructed. The syndrome can be treated by pricking the acupoints on the Foot Shaoyin Channel of Kidney, purge when there is a surplus and invigorte when it is deficient. Whenever there is stagnation in the channel, the pricking methods stated above should be applied.
