1. He swallowed his rising anger.

他竭力按下升起的怒火。

2.Calculation never made a hero.

举棋不定永远成不了英雄。

3.The man had an atrocious French accent.

这个人的法国话糟透了。

这三句中，词义引申的有： 

swallow忍受、压制，译“竭力按下”。

calculation计算，译“举棋不定' 、

Atrocious凶恶的，译“糟透了'

C. 词义变动较大：

1.You ought to consider the ifs now and then. Thinking about it sometimes prepares you for when.

要经常考虑“假若”。有时，考虑“假若”便为“一旦”做了准备。

2.Education ’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.

教育的目的是用虚心代替无知。

3.The older you get, the more important it is not to act your age.

年纪愈髙，愈不能卖老..

这三例中，词义变动较大的有： 

when (事件发生之）时间。译“一旦”

empty mind空虚的心。译“无知”。 

act one' s age举止与年龄相称,译“卖老'

D.有极少数情況，可以撇幵词典，另起新义。

1.Those who feel it is okey to tell white lies soon go colorblind.

认为说小谎无害的人，马上便会不辨大小。

2.These two-words “working-class district”，..

这三个字“ 工人区”……

前一例中，colorblind (色肓)译为“不辨大小',后一例中，two

words (两个字）译为“三个字”，均与词典不合。

以上四种情况，第一种当然占最大多数。第二种也相当常见。 第三种较少，但也时常碰到。第四种情况少见。

可现，一个词或词组如何译，词典释义固然重要，上下文章也同样重要。

二、句子：以上我们看了单词和词组，现在来看看句子。

(一）词序：中英文词序不太相同，原文与译文的词序可能有种种情况。

A.按原文词序：以下各句，译文与原文词序相同。

1.Accuracy is duty and not a virtue.

力求准确是责任而非美德，

2.Time is the fairest and toughest judge.

时间是最公正、最无情的法官,

3.The right to do something does not mean that doing it is right.

有权做一件事并不表明做这件事正确。

B.部分变动：

1.Never give advice unasked.

无求莫进言。

2.Progress is man’s ability to complicate simplicity.

进步是人使简单变复杂的本领。

3.Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.

失败者百分之九十九爱原谅自己。
