3) A passage about the history of the University of Cape Town.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is South Africa's oldest university, and is one of Africa's leading teaching and research institutions. UCT was founded in 1829 as the South African College, a boys' school which also provided some tertiary education. The College developed into a fully fledged university during the period 1880 to 1900.

The years 1902 to 1918 saw the establishment of the Medical School, the introduction of engineering courses and a Department of Education. UCT was formally established as a university in 1918.

Apart from establishing itself as a leading research and teaching university in the decades that followed, the period 1960 to 1990 was marked by sustained opposition to apartheid, particularly in higher education.

4)A passage about the worker's unions in China.

Worker's unions China

ACCORDING to China's trade union law, enterprises or institutions with 25 employees or more should establish trade unions. These trade unions are part of the national ACFTU. Anyone who applies to set up a union should get approval hy the employers.

ACFTU statistics show that in September 2005, ACFTU had more than 15 million members, or 69 percent of the total number of employees in China. However, only about 26 per cent of the more than 150, 000 foreign-funded enterprises in China had set up trade unions.

ACFTU says its role is to safeguard the rights of workers and promote good relations between employers and employees.

Through reading you may jump to the conclusion that Passage l is easy to remember because it is interesting and closer to campus life, Passage 2 is easy to understand because you often hear it from radio broadcasting and see it on TV, yet it is difficult to remember, Passage 3 is not difficult to get the main idea, however it is hard to remember the years, Passage 4 is the most difficult to remember because students are not familiar with the topic.

It follows that the students' questions and their findings through practice actually reveal a very important yet interesting prohlem - the problem of active (short-term) memory and passive (long-term) memory. By passive memory is meant to memorize things on the basis of

a thorough understanding and the memory lasts for a relatively long time, Active memory helps to memorize things actively in a very short time hut it does not last long. In the course of interpretation, when an interpreter hears a speech, his/her active memory is triggered and

he/she starts to memorize the words and expressions uttered and the grammatical structures used by the speaker. However, when he/she is reproducing the speech, he/she has to recall the relevant content stored in his/her memory. In this way, he/she is continuously moving

from passive memory to active memory and vice versa. To help short-term memory,it is suggested that interpreters learn by heart as many special terms relevant to the topic as they can possibly manage before interpretation.

Generally speaking, a trained interpreter is able to continuously interpret a speech of 3 -15 minutes accurately and completely. Statistics show that a Chinese adult is able to memorize a seven-digit numher or six Chinese characters at a time. But human memory is limited after all. Although short-term memory can be intensified through training, it cannot last long. To supplement memory efficiency, it is necessary to turn to Note-Taking.
