黄帝日:治人之五态奈何?少师日:太阴之人，多阴而无阳，其阴血浊，其卫气涩，阴阳不和，缓筋而厚皮，不之疾泻，不能移之。少阴之人，多阴少阳，小胃而大肠，六腑不调，其阳明脉小而太阳脉大，必审调之，其血易脱，其气易败也。

Yellow Emperor asked: "How to treat the five different types of men?" Shaoshi said: "To a man of Taiyin who has plenty of Yin without Yang, as his Yin blood is turbid, his Wei-energy is choppy, his Yin and Yang are not harmonious at all, and he has the characteristics of the flaccid tendon and the thick skin, if the rapid purging therapy is not applied to this kind of man, his disease can hardly be removed. To a man of Shaoyin type who has more Yin and little Yang, as his stomach is small and his intestine is large, the functions of his six hollow organs are not harmonious, since the energy of his Foot Yangming Channel is smaller. and the energy of his Hand Taiyang Channel is larger. when treating. one must be very careful, as his blood can casily become exhausted, his energy can easily be injured also.

太阳之人，多阳而少阴[少阴:《甲乙》卷一第十六作“无阴”]，必谨调之，无脱其阴，而泻其阳，阳重[阳重:当注本，张注本并作“阴重”]脱者易狂，阴阳皆脱者，暴死不知人也。少阳之人，多阳少阴，经小而络大，血在中而气[气:《甲乙》卷一第十六“气”下有“在”字]外，实阴而虚阳，独泻其络脉，则强气脱而疾，中气不足，病不起也。

"To the one who belongs to the Taiyang type who has plenty of Yang without Yin, he should be treated cautiously to avoid the exhaustion of Yin, and it is only Yang that can be purged. When Yin is consumed greatly, the patient will become manic due to the overabundance of Yang; if both the Yin and Yang are exhausted, the patient will be unconcious or die suddenly. The man who belongs to Shaoyang type has more Yang and little Yin, his channels are small and his collaterals are large, and his blood is inside and his energy is outside. When treating, it should substantialize the Yin channels and purges the Yang collaterals. But, if one solely purge the Yang collaterals excessively, the Yang energy will be exhausted quickly causing the insufficiency of the middle-warmer energy, and the disease can hardly be cured.

阴阳和平之人，其阴阳之气和，血脉调，谨诊其阴阳，视其邪正，安容仪，审有余不足，盛则泻之，虚则补之，不盛不虚，以经取之。此所以调阴阳，别五态之人者也。

"The man who belongs to the type of both mild in Yin and Yang, his Yin energy and Yang energy are harmonious and his channels are concordant. In treating, one should examine the changes of the Yin and Yang carefully to know the overabundance or debility of the evil energy and the health energy, observe the patient's appearance to determine which side is having a surplus and which side is deficient, when the evil is overabundant, apply purge therapy, when the healthy energy is deficient, apply the invigorating therapy, if the disease is of neither overabundant nor deficient, prick the channel where the disease resides. This is the criterion for adjusting the Yin and Yang and distinguishing the five different types of men."

黄帝日:夫五态之人者，相与毋故，卒然新会，未知其行也，何以别之?少师答日:众人之属，不如[如:周本，与注本，作“知”]五态之人者，故五五二十五人，而五态之人不与焉。五态之人，尤不合于众者也。黄帝曰:别五态之人奈何?少师日:太阴之人，其状黢黑然黑色，念然下意，临临然长大，腘然未偻，此太阴之人也。

Shaoshi said:"In the various types of men, the characteristics of the five types stated above are not known, so, there are twenty five types of man in Yin and Yang, but the five types of men stated above are excluded, and they are quite different from common people." Yellow Emperor asked: "How to distinguish the five types of men?" Shaoshi said: "For a man of the Taiyin type, his skin is dark and black. he appears to be solemn, but he is modest in consciousness, his body is tall with his muscle of the neck protruding like a hunchback but actually, he has no rickets. This is the appearance of a man who belongs to the Taiyin type.

少阴之人，其状清然窃然，固以阴贼，立而躁崄，行而似伏，此少阴之人也。

"For a man in Shaoyin type, his appearance is cool and shallow, he likes to injure others with insidiousness especially, he stands impetuosly and slant, and walks like in prostration. This is the appearance of the man who belongs to the Shaoyin type.

太阳之人，其状轩轩储储，反身折腘，此太阳之人也。

"For a man of the Taiyang type, he appears to be relaxed and gay, he is self-satisfied, his chest is sticking out and his abdomen is protruding as if his poplitea are bending. This is the appearance of the man who belongs to the Taiyang type.

少阳之人，其状立则好仰，行则好摇，其两臂[其两臂:《甲乙》卷一第十六，此三字属上读]两肘则常出于背[两肘则常出于臂:《甲乙》卷一第十六作“两臂肘皆出于臂”]，此少阳之人也。

"For a man of the Shaoyang type, he tosses his head when standing and sways when walking, and he often puts his two arms and two elbows in his back. This is the appearance of the man who belongs to the Shaoyang type.

阴阳和平之人，其状委委然，随随然，颙颙然，愉愉然，䁢䁢然，豆豆然，众人皆曰君子，此阴阳和平之人也。

"For a man of both mild in Yin and Yang type, his appearance is nice, he appears to be obedient, gentle and respectful, he is amiable and pleasant with kind. benign looks, and people call him a gentleman. This is the appearance of the man who belongs to both mild in Yin and Yang type."
