黄帝日:愿闻营卫之所行，皆何道从来?岐伯答曰:营出于中焦，卫出于下[下:《太素》卷十二首篇，《灵枢略》“下”并作“上”]焦。黄帝日:愿闻三[三:按“三”误，应作“上”]焦之所出。岐伯答曰:上焦出于胃上口，并咽以上贯膈而布胸中，走腋，循太阴之分而行，还至阳明，上至舌，下足阳明，常与背俱行[常与替俱行:《病沅》卷十五《三焦病候》“背”下有“部”字]于阳二十五度，行于阴亦二十五度一周也，故五十度而复大会于手太阴矣[于阳二十五度至手太阴矣:《病沅》卷十五《三焦病候》无“于阳”以下三十字]。黄帝日:人有热，饮食下胃，其气未定，汗则出，或出于面，或出于背，或出于身半，其不循卫气之道而出何也?岐伯日:此外伤于风，内开媵理，毛蒸理泄，卫气走之，固不得循其道，此气傈悍滑疾，见开而出，故不得从其道，故命曰漏泄。

" Qibo answered: "The energy of upper issues from the upper opening of the stomach, it runs along the gullet, passes the diaphragm and spreads in the chest, then, it runs horizontally to reach the armpit, descends along the range of the Hand Taiyin Channel of Lung, returns to the Hand Yangming Channel of Large Intestine, ascends to reach the nose, and then descends to pour into the Foot Yangming Channel of Stomach, and it often runs side by side with the Ying-energy and the Wei-energy." Yellow Emperor asked: "When one has heat in the body, he perspires as soon as the food and drink have just entered into the stomach, and the refined energy has not yet been transformed then; the sweat comes out from the face, back and the lateral side of the body and does not come out along the locations of the operating route of the Wei-energy, and what is the reason?" Qibo said: "It is because the invasion of the wind-evil from outside causes the loosening of the striae, and when the fine hair and the skin are steamed by the wind-heat, the striae will be open, and the Wei-energy will not run along its regular route, but passes the locations where the muscular striae are loose; as the characteristic of the Wei-energy is valiant and slippery, it passes through the locations where the striae are loose, and it is called the 'leaking of energy'."

黄帝日:愿闻中焦之所出。岐伯答曰:中焦亦并[并:日刻本旁注:“并”，一日当作“出”]胃中，出上焦之后，此所受气者，泌精粕，蒸津液，化其精微，上注于肺脉，乃化而为血，以奉生身，莫贵于此，故独得行于经隧，命日营气。黄帝日:夫血之与气，异名同类，何谓也?岐伯答曰:营卫者精气也，血者神气也，故血之与气，异名同类焉。故夺血者无汗，夺气者无血，故人生有一死而无两生。

Yellow Emperor said:" I hope to hear about the conditions of the middle warmer-issue." Qibo said: "The energy of middle warmer also issues from the stomach and behind the upper warmer, it transforms and produces the tastes of the five cereals, it strains away the dross and retains the refined fluid and pours it into the lung, then, it is transformed into blood to nourish the whole body, so, it is most valuable, it can run within the tunnel of the channel and it is called 'Ying' (nourish)". Yellow Emperor asked: "The blood and energy are different in names, but in fact, they belong to the same category, and why is it?" Qibo answered:"The Wei-energy is transformed from the refined energy of water and cereals and the Ying-energy is the variation of the water and cereals, so, although they are different in names, yet they are of the same category. Therefore, when the patient collapes due to massive hemorrthage, he must not be treated with diaphoresis, when one has the consumption of the energy, he must not lose his blood; of course, death is inevitable in one's life, but one can not revive after death."

黄帝日:愿闻下焦之所出。岐伯答曰:下焦者，别回肠，注于膀胱而渗入焉。故水谷者，常并居于胃中，成糟粕，而俱下于大肠，而成下焦，渗而俱下，济泌别汁，循下焦而渗入膀胱焉。黄帝日:人饮酒，酒亦入胃，谷未熟而小便独先下何也?岐伯答曰:酒者熟谷之液也，其气悍以清，故后谷而人，先谷而液出焉。黄帝曰:善。余闻上焦如雾，中焦如沤，下焦如渎，此之谓也。

" Qibo said: "The lower warmer starts from the lower end of the small intestine, it sends the dross to the large intestine, and pours the water into the bladder, and they are completed by gradual permeance. So, the substance of the water and cereals kind are stored in the stomach regularly, and after digestion, the dross will be sent to the large intestine; in the course of digestion, the water is squeezed、 the lucid fluid is retained, and the turbid fluid is drained to the bladder along the lower warmer." Yellow Emperor asked: "When wine is drunken it also enters into the stomach, but the wine can be excreted through urination before the rice is digested, and what is the reason?" Qibo answered: "The wine is a liquid formed after the fermentation of the cereals, its energy is valiant and slippery, so, even when it enters into the stomach later than the food, it can be excreted through urination prior to the food, "Yellow Emperor said: "Good. So the saying goes: 'in the functions of the triple warmer, the upper warmer is like mists, the middle warmer is like the pivot, and the lower warmer is like the gutter."
