中医翻译例文——方盛衰论篇/On the Prosperity and Debility of the Yin and Yang Energies

诊有十[“十”疑当作“五”]度度人:脉度、藏度、肉度、筋度、俞度,阴阳气尽[按主注:“诊备尽阴阳虚盛之理”,细译其意,似本句应作“诊备阴阳”],人病自具。脉动无常,散阴颇阳,脉脱不具。诊无常行,诊必上下,度民君卿。受师不卒,使术不明,不察逆从,是为妄行,持雌失雄,弃阴附阳,不知并合,诊故不明,传之后世,反论自章。

"There are standards of five aspects in measuring the disease of the patient: they are the pulse standard, the viscera standard, the muscle standard, the tendon standard and the shu point standard. If one can understand thoroughly the principle of Yin and Yang through diagnosis, he can know the disease comprehensively. There is no regular pattern in the pulsation, the Yin pulse may be scattered, the Yang pulse may be partial-abundant and the condition of the pulsation may not be obvious, so, in diagnosis, no regular routine can be followed. When treating, both the Renying pulse and the Fuyang (Chongyang) pulse must be inspected both, and the social status and the happy or miserable situation of the patient must be taken into consideration. If the physician has not been graduated in his medical study, he has only a lower level in medical treating, and unable to distinguish the adverse or agreeable condition of the energy, he can only injure the Yang by invigorating the Yin,or consumes the Yin by invigorating the Yang. As he does not understand the reasons of the balance of Yin and Yang, he can by no means to have an accurate diagnosis.  When he imparts his ways of diagnosis and treating to the later generations, he will expose his defects of violating the ancient teaching.

至阴虚,天气绝,至阳盛,地气不足;阴阳并交,至人之所行;阴阳并交者,阳气先至,阴气后至。是以圣人持诊之道,先后阴阳而持之,《奇恒之势》乃六十首,诊合微之事,追阴阳之变,章五中之情,其中之论,取虚实之要,定五度之事,知此乃足以诊。是以切阴不得阳,诊消亡。得阳不得阴,守学不湛,知左不知右,知右不知左,知上不知下,知先不知后,故治不久,知魏知善,知病知不病,知高知下,知坐知起,知行知止,用之有纪,诊道乃具。

"When the utmost Yin energy (the earth energy) is deficient, the Yang energy will not descend due to severing: when the utmost Yang energy (the heaven energy) is prosperous, the Yin energy will become weak and not ascending; but a cultivated physician can mingle and communicate the energies of Yin and Yang. In the mingling and communicating of the Yin and Yang energies, the Yang energy comes first, and the Yin energy comes next.

"Thus, when a physician of higher level diagnoses and palpates, he always notices the order of priority of Yin and Yang, infers to the sixty conditions of the ordinary and extraordinary diseases, synthesizes the small and fragmentary cases obtained from diagnosis, and weighs the changes in Yin and Yang to know clearly the location of the disease in the five viscera, then, infers the medical principle and the outline of sthenia and asthenia to judge according to the five standards. When a physician knows all these things, he is capable in diagnosis and treating.

"When a physician knows only the Yin but not knowing the Yang, he is not capable in diagnosing, when he knows only Yang but not knowing the Yin, the medical knowledge he learned is not profound, when he knows only the left side but not knowing the right. knowing the right side only but not knowing the left, knowing what is above but not knowing what is below or knowing what comes early but not knowing what comes late, the curative effect will not be enduring. When treating, one must know the good through the evil, know the healthy condition through the disease, know what is below through what is above, know the standing condition through the sitting condition, know the ceasing condition through the

moving condition. Only in this way, can the treating be in perfect order, the diagnosis be all-exclusive, and the treating may always not get into trouble.

起所有余,知所不足,度事上下,脉事因格。是以形弱气虚,死,形气有余,脉气不足,死。脉气有余,形气不足。生。是以诊有大方,坐起有常,出入有行,以转神明,必清必净,上观下观,司八正邪,别五中部,按脉动静,循尺滑潼,寒温之意,视其大小,合之病能逆从以得,复知病名,诊可十全,不失人情。故诊之,或视息视意,故不失条理,道甚明察,故能长久;不知此道,失经绝理,亡言妄期,此谓失道。

"When inspecting the aspect which is having a surplus, one can know the aspect which is insufficient, when considering the upper and lower parts of the patient, one can probe the reason through diagnosis. Such as, when the patient's physique is weak and his energy is debilitating, it shows death of the patient; when the energy of the physique is overabundant and the energy of the channel is deficient, it also shows death of the patient; when the channel energy is overabundant and the physique energy is insufficient, it shows the patient will survive.

"Therefore, in diagnosis and treating, the physician should abide with the medical principle, in his sitting, standing and acting, he should do it according to a definite rule. He should inspect the upper and lower parts with a sensitive mind, to distinguish the four seasons and the eight solar terms and the part of the five viscera which is atacked by the evil energy soberly. Press and observe the condition of the pulse, inspect the slippery, choppy, cold and warm pulse condition on the skin of anterolateral side of the forearm, examine the change of the stool and urine of the patient to know whether the energy is adverse or agreeable and ascertain the name of the disease. When one diagnoses and treats in this way, it will be flawless and agree with the human feelings. So, in treating, one can always keep the orderliness by inspecting the breath and the mental attitude of the patient. When one's medical theory is extremily superior, he can naturally avoid the malpractices. If one does not understand these things, but violates the principle and fundamental tenet, talks about the disease and draws conclusion rashly, he is running counter to the law."
