雷公日:“大矣。请问:人哭泣而泣不出者，若出而少，涕不从之何也?帝日:夫泣不出者，哭[“哭”是似乎作“志”不悲也]。不泣者，神不慈者。神不慈则志不悲，阴阳相持，泣安能独来。夫志悲者，惋惋则冲阴，冲阴则志去目，志去则神不守精，精神去目，涕泣出也。

Lei Gong said: "Your explanation is splendid. Some one wants to cry but fails to cry out, or he has only a few tears without mucus, and what is the reason?" Yellow Emperor said: "When one cries without tears, it is because his will is not sad, when he fails to cry out, it is because his spirit is not being moved, when one's spirit is not moved, his will will not be sad. Since the Yin (the will) and the Yang (the spirit) stalemate without any mutual responses, how can the tears come out by itself?

且子独不诵不念夫经言乎，厥则目无所见。夫人厥则阳气并于上，阴气并于下，阳并于上，则火独光也;阴并于下则足寒，足寒则胀也。夫一水不胜五[《太素》“五”作“两”]火，故目眦[明抄本“目”下无“眦”字]盲。

"When one's will is sad, he will have a sentiment of sorrow which will stir the Yin energy causing the will of kidney to give up the keeping guard of the eyes. When the will of kidney leaves the eyes, the spirit will not guard the refined energy. If both the spirit and the refined energy leave the eyes, the tears and mucus will come out at the same time.

"What is more, haven't you read the texts in the medical classics? It was stated in the medical classics:'When one contracts the jue-syndrome, the Yang energy will be accumulated in the upper part of the body and the Yin energy in the lower part. When the Yang energy accoumulated above, the Yang energy will be hyperactive in the upper part; when the Yin energy accumulates in the lower part, it will cause the disease of cold feet and thereupon distention. Since one water can not overcome two fires, it will cause the eyes to see nothing'.

是以冲风，泣下而不止。夫风之中目也，阳气内守于精，是火气燔目，故见风则泣下也。有以比之，夫火疾风生乃能雨，此之类也。

"The fact of the flowing out unceasingly of tears when one is facing the wind is because when the eyes are attacked by the wind evil , the Yang energy descends to guard the essence of life. When the Yang energy is absent, the fire energy will burn the eyes which causes the flowing of tears. For instance, a strong wind can cause the rain, and this condition in human

body is about the same."
