阳明脉解篇/Yangming Mai Jie

(The Explanation on the Yangming Channel)

黄帝问曰:足阳明之脉病，恶人与火，闻木音则惕然而惊，钟鼓不为动，闻木音而惊何也?愿闻其故。岐伯对曰:阳明者胃脉也，胃者土也，故闻木音而惊者，土恶木也。帝曰:善。其恶火何也?岐伯曰:阳明主肉，其脉血气盛，邪客之则热，热甚则恶火。

Yellow Emperor asked: "The patient with the disease of Foot Yangming detests man and fire, and become frightened when hearing a sound made by wood, but has no response when hearing the sound of a bell. Why is he afraid of the sound of wood only? I want to know the reason. "Qibo answered: "The Foot Yangming is a stomach channel, in the five elements, it belongs to earth, as the earth detests the subjugation from the wood, the patient will be frightened when hearing the sound of wood. "

Yellow Emperor said: "Good. But why he detests the fire?" Qibo said: "Yangming takes charge of the muscle, and Yangming Channel is abundant with blood and energy, when it is injured by the exogenous evils, Yang energy will be obstructed and the blood is stagnated to produce heat, when the heat in the body is excessive, the patient will detest fire."

帝曰：其恶人何也?岐伯曰:阳明厥则喘而惋[《甲乙》作闷]，惋则恶人。帝曰：或喘而死者，或喘而生者，何也?岐伯曰:厥逆连藏则死，连经则生。

Yellow Emperor asked: "Why he detests man?" Qibo said: "When Jueni (coldness of limbs, pain over the chest and abdomen, and temporary suspension of consciousness) of Yangming occurs, the patient will have dyspnea and feels disquieted, so he detests man."

Yellow Emperor asked: "Some patient died due to jueni and dyspnea, but some can still survive despite of them, and why is it so?" Qibo said: "If Jueni has reached the viscera and the patient has dyspnea, he will die; if Jueni has only reached the channel, he can survive although he has dyspnea."

帝日:善。病甚[《太素》“病甚”上有“阳明”二字]则弃衣而走，登高而歌，或至不食数日，逾垣上屋，所上之处[《太素》“所上”下无“之处”二字]，皆非其素所能也，病反能者何也?岐伯曰:四支者，诸阳之本也，阳盛则四支实，实则能登高[《甲乙》“登高”下有“高歌”二字]也。

Yellow Emperor said:"Good. He could not do such things usually, but he is able to do them when he is ill, and why is it so?" Qibo said:"The four extremities are the foundations of all Yangs, when the Yang energy is overabundant, the extremities will be sthenic, and when the extremities are sthenic, the patient will be able to climb up to a high place."

帝曰:其弃衣而走者何也?岐伯曰:热盛于身，故弃衣欲[《太素》“欲”作“而”]走也。

Yellow Emperor asked: "Why the patient takes off his clothes and run about?" Qibo said: "When the heat-evil is partial overabundant in the body, the patient is apt to take off his clothes and run about."

帝日:其妄言(《太素》“其”下无“妄言”二字]骂署，不避亲疏而歌者何也?岐伯日: 阳盛则使人妄言[《甲乙》“则使人”作“故”字，“妄言”二字应删]骂詈不避亲疏，而不欲食，不欲食，故妄走(明抄本“不欲食”以下九字作“歌”也。
