帝曰:愿闻三阴三阳之离合也。岐伯日:圣人南面而立，前曰广明，后曰太冲，太冲之地，名曰少阴，少阴之上，名曰太阳，太阳根起于至阴，结于命门，名曰阴中之阳。中身而上，名曰广明，广明之下，名曰太阴，太阴之前，名曰阳明，阳明根起于厉兑，名曰阴中之阳。厥阴之表，名曰少阳，少阳根起于窍阴，名日阴中之少阳。是故三阳之离合也，太阳为开，阳明为阖，少阳为枢。三经者，不得相失也，搏而勿浮，命曰一阳。

Yellow Emperor said:“I like to know the individual activities and mutual functionings of the three Yins and the three Yangs."Qibo said: "When a sage stands facing the south, in the front is Yang and it is called Guangmin (Yang being abundant), while the rear is Yin and it is called Tai chong, The Taichong channel starts from the kidney channel of Foot-Shaoyin, above the kidney channel of Foot-Shaoyin is the Urinary Bladder Channel of Foot-Taiyang. The lower terminal of Foot-Taiyang starts from the Zhiyin point of the foot , and its upper terminal connects the Jingming point on the face (the eye). The Taiyang channel coincides with the Shaoyin channel, and the Taiyang channel and the Shaoyin channel are being the superficies and the interior, so the Taiyang channel is called a component part of Yang in Yin.

"In the upper part of the body, Yang is overabundant, so it is called Guangming. Below the Guangming is the location of Taiyin-spleen, as the lower part of the body associates with Yin, so it is called Taiyin. In front of the Taiyin is the location of the Yangming-stomach, as the front associates with Yang, so it is called Yangming. The lower terminal of Yangming channel starts from the Lidui point of the footv as Yangming channel and Taiyin channel are being the superficies and interior, so it is called a component part of Yang in Yin.

"The Jueyin and Shaoyang channels are being the superficies and interior, Jueyin in the exhaustion of Yin, which causes the Yang to emerge, as the Yang is newly born, it is called Shaoyang. Thc lower end of Shaoyang channel starts from the Qiaoyin point of the foot as Shaoyang channel and Jueyin channel are being the superficies and the interior, and also is in the stage of initial birth of Yang energy, so it is called a component part of Shaoyang in Yin.

"So the activities and mutual functionings of the three Yangs are: The Taiyang controls the superficies, it spreads the Yang energy to guard the exterior, so it is open: Yangming controls the interior, it recieves the Yang energy to support the viscera, so it is closes the Shaoyang situates at the location of half superficies and half interior to transport between the exterior and the interior, so it is the pivot. The mutual functions of open, close and pivot of the three Yangs must not be lacking, its pulse condition should be a little bit slippery and not floating. When the energies of the three Yangs being harmonious and unified, the condition is called one Yang. In a word, the open, close and pivot are the activities of the three Yang channels, and the mutual actions of regulating and unifying are the mutual functions of the three Yang channels."

帝曰:愿闻三阴。岐伯日:外者为阳，内者为阴，然则中为阴，其冲在下，名日太阴，太阴根起于隐白，名日阴中之阴。太阴之后，名日少阴，少阴根起于涌泉，名日阴中之少阴。少阴之前，名曰厥阴，厥阴根起于大敦，阴之绝阳，名日阴之绝阴。是故三阴之离合也，太阴为开，厥阴为圈，少阴为枢。三经者，不得相失也，博而勿沉，名日一阴。

Yellow Emperor said:"What about the individual activities and mutual functionings conditions of the three Yins' channels? " Qibo said: "Yang guards the muscle and superficies outside, and Yin nourishes the viscera inside. As the 'inside' is also Yin, and the Chong channel is below the Yin, so it is called Taiyin Channel, The Taiyin channel starts from the Yinbai (Hidden White) point on the foot, so it is called a component part of Yin in Yin.

"Behind the Taiyang-spleen is the location of Shaoyin-Kidney. The terminal of Shaoyin channel starts from the Yongquan (Pouring Spring)point of the foot,it is called a component part of Shaoyin in Yin.

"In front of the Shaoyin-kidney channel is the location of the Jueyin-liver channel, the root of the Jueyin channel starts from the Dadun (Great Mound) point of the foot. Since this channel is of pure Yin without Yang, so it is the exhausted Yang in Yin, as Yin is exhausted here, it is also called exhausted Yin in Yin.

"Therefore the condition of individual activities and mutual functions of the three Yins are: Taiyin is the superficies of the three Yins, if locates in the middle to spread Yin-energy and irrigates the surroundings, so it is open; Jueyin collects the Yin energy and transmits it to the interior, so it is close. Shaoyin is the kidney, when the kidney-energy is ample, the liver and spleen will bring their functions of open and close into a full play, so it is the pivot. The functions of these channels are complementing each other and none of them should be lacking. Its pulse condition should be of slight slippery and must not be over-floating. In this way, the energies of the three Yins will be harmonious and integrated, so it is called one Yin. The open, close and pivot are the activities of the three Yin channels, and they are supplementing each other, keeping harmony and integrity are the mutual functions of the three Yin channels. These are the general condition of the three Yin channels.

阴阳霾霾，积传为一周，气里形表而为相成也。

"The energies of Yin and Yang operate and move to and fro unceasingly in the body. It circulates one cycle by a day and night and goes round and starts again. This is the over-all condition of the energy which moves inside and manifest outside of the body, which is completed by the mutual actions of the interior and the exterior."
