帝曰:有其年已老而有子者何也?岐伯曰:此其天寿过度,气脉常通,而肾气有余也。此虽有子,男不过尽八八,女不过尽七七,而天地之精气皆竭矣。
The Emperor asked: "Someone is able to have a child even he is old, and what is the reason?" Qibo answered: "This kind of people has a richer natural endowment of primordial kidney energy, and has a better postnatal recuperation to health. although they are aged, yet their channel-energies are still not declining, so, there is still possibility for them to have children. Nevertheless, for a man, the age for having a child can not exceed sixty four (8 X 8), and for a woman, can not exceed the age of forty nine (7 X 7). When the essence and vital energy of a man or woman being exhausted, it is also impossible for them to have any child."
帝日:夫道者年皆百数,能有子乎?岐伯曰:夫道者能却老而全形,身年虽寿,能生子也。
The Emperor said: “Since people who are good at preserving health can live to the age of one hundred years old, can a person of one hundred years old to have any child?" Qibo answered: "For those who are good at preserving health, although they reach the age of one hundred years old, as they can keep their body in a good condition to postpone senility, preserve their physique from declining, they still can have children.'
黄帝日:余闻上古有真人者,提挈天地,把握阴阳,呼吸精气,独立守神,肌肉若一,故能寿敝[沈祖绵日:“敝字误疑敌字也”天地,无有终时,此其道生。
The Emperor said: "As I am told that in ancient times, some people who were very good at preserving their health, reaching the level of being a 'perfect man'. All their behaviours adapted to the change of nature quite at ease, they could master the law of the wax and wane of Ying and Yang. They respired the refined energy, guarding the spirit independently and thus their muscles would be an integrated whole. Since they could modulate their essence and vital energy to adapt their physique and spirit, therefore, their life would be everlasting, and could survive for ever like the heaven and earth. This is mainly because they could practise the way of preserving health properly.
中古之时,有至人者,淳德全道,和于阴阳,调于四时,去世离俗,积精全神,游行天地之间,视听八达之外,此盖益其寿命而强者也,亦归于真人。
"In the middle ancient times, some people who were good at preserving health reaching the level of being a 'supreme man'. They studied and practised the way of preserving health whole heartedly with a pure and honest moral character. They could keep their behaviours and minds to fit the law of the wax and wane of Yin and Yang and the sequent weather changes of the seasons. They were able to maintain their primordial energy concentratively by freeing themselves from wordly turmoil so as they could keep their physique strong, their spirit abundant, and their ears and eyes acute. They travelled extensively and to hear and see things in distant places. This kind of people could certainly prolong their life span. Their level of cultivating health had almost attained the status of a 'perfect man'
其次有圣人者,处天地之和,从八风之理,适嗜欲,于世俗之间,无恚噴之心,行不欲离于世,被服章(林校云“被服章”三字疑衍),举不欲观于俗,外不劳形于事,内无思想之患,以恬愉为务,以自得为功,形体不敝,精神不散,亦可以百数(“亦”字疑脱“年”字,王注:“年登百数”)。
'Next, some people who were good at preserving health to the level of being a 'Sage'. They lived quietly and comfortably in the natural environment of the universe, they follow the rule of the eight winds (different winds from all directions) and could avoid being hurt by them. They regulated their eating, drinking and daily life in a moderate style when lived together with common people. Their temperaments were stable and calm without indignation and fluctuation of mood. In outward appearance, they did not divorce from the reality of their daily life, they worked in the office with office dresses like others, but they dealt with things differently from that of common people. They never did excessive physical labour or engaged in any excessive deliberation to cause worry, but always kept their mind in a cheerful mood and contented with their own circumstances. It was precisely because of these facts, they could cultivated themselves to have strong bodies, and kept their spirit from dissipating, and thus, their lives could be lasted to one hundred years old.
其次有贤人者,法则天地,象似日月,辨[“辩”应作“辨”列星辰,逆从阴阳,分别四时,将从上古合同于道,亦可使益寿而有极时。
"Next, those who could preserve their health to the state of being a 'Wise and goodman'. They could master and apply the way of preserving health in accordance with the variation of heaven and earth, such as with the different location of the sun, the waxing and waning of the moon, the distribution of stars, the mutual contradiction of Yin and Yang and the alternation of the four seasons. They mastered and practised the ways of preserving health, sought to tally with the ways of preserving health in ancient times, so they could also prolong their lives to the maximum limit."
