The qualities and requirements of an interpreter can be roughly summarized as follows:

1. An interpreter must have a profound love for his/her motherland.

2. An interpreter must be physically strong, psychologically confident, professionally moral, culturally conscious, and sincerely cooperative.

3. An interpreter must have received a good education and special training, and training in a specific subject area.

4. The working language of an interpreter must he a language popular to most people of the world, such as English, French, German, Spanish.

5. An interpreter should have a quick mind for understanding and producing speeches both in the source language and the target language.

6. An interpreter should be well informed of the happenings in the world.

7. An interpreter should have a good command of vocabulary.

8. An interpreter should expand his/her scope of knowledge about natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, such as mathematics, physics, computer science, astronomy, geography, biology, history, economics, medicine, culture, etc. and interdisciplinary subjects.

9. An interpreter should carefully study such terms as proper names, abbreviations, trade marks, names of products, films, books, companies, etc. as they are an integral part of contemporary language, e. g. UNESCO, UNDP, WHO, GDP, APEC, SARS, Cannon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pierre Cardin, Crocodile, Pepsi, 7-Up, Tang, Dunlop, Head & Shoulder, Jude the Obscure, Roman Holiday, etc.

10. An interpreter should be familiar with different styles, for example, a political style is relatively more formal than other styles. Often the neutral style is used in interpretation.

11. An interpreter should master interpretation strategies including listening skills, imagination power, ability of deduction, ability of expression and so on.

12. As interpretation is affected by many factors, such as language, environment, audience, psychology, an interpreter should possess deep insight, acute judgment and ability of analysis.

13. An interpreter must always act courteously, behave gently, wear neatly, and speak clearly.
