(On Carbuncle and Deep-Rooted Carbuncle)

黄帝日:余闻肠胃受谷，上焦出气，以温分[分:《灵枢略・六气论》作爪”]肉，而养骨节，通腠理。中焦出气如露[露:《甲乙》卷十一第九上作“雾”]，上[上:《鬼遗方》卷四无此字]注黔谷，而渗孙脉，津液和调，变化而赤为血，血和则孙脉先满溢[溢:《太素》卷二十六《痈疽》作“满”，属下读]，乃注于络脉，皆盈，乃注于经脉。阴阳已张，因息乃行，行有经[经:《千金翼方》卷二十三并作“纲”]纪，周有道理，与天合同，不得休止。切而调之，从虚去实，泻则不足，疾则气减，留则先后。从实去虚，补则有余。血气巳调，形气乃持。余已知血气之平与不平，未知痈疽之所从生，成则之时，死生之期，有[有:《医心方》卷十五“有”上并有“期”字]远近，何以度之，可得闻乎?

When one's body fluid is harmonious, it turns into the red fluid of blood, when the blood is harmonious, it will fill the minute collateral, and when it is being filled, the blood will pour into the collateral branch of the large channel, when it is filled, the blood will pour into the channel, when the Ying-energy and the Wei-energy are fully filled, the blood will spread to the whole body along with the respiration. The circulation of the energy and blood has a certain rule like the revolution of the sun and moon in certain degrees, it operates unceasingly like the universe. To the diseases of asthenia and sthenia, one must treat whole heartedly. Eliminate the sthenia-evil by purging therapy, but if the purging is excessive, it will injure the healthy energy to cause insufficiency. In pricking, the pulling out of the needle should be quick to reduce the evil-energy. If the times of the needle retention in different cases are all the same, the disease can hardly take a turn for the better. Apply the therapy supporting the healthy energy to eliminate the deficiency, but if the invigoration is excessive, it will cause the sthenia to have a surplus and promotes the remainder evil. When the energy and blood are harmonious, the relation between the physical body and the energy will remain normal. Now, I have known the principle of the balance and imbalance of the energy and blood, but I don't know from where the carbuncle and the deep-rooted carbuncle produce, the date of their shaping and dispersing, the date of the patient's recovery, death and the way of inferring the remote or recent date of them. Can you tell me the principle about them?"

岐伯曰:经脉留行不止，与天同度，与地合纪。故天宿失度，日月薄蚀，地经失纪，水道流溢，草萱[萱:《医心方》卷十五并作“虚”《医心方》旁注:“虚死草也”]不成，五谷不殖，径路不通，民不往来，巷聚邑居，则[则:《太素》卷二十六《痈疽》并无此字]别离异处，血气犹然，请言其故。夫血脉营卫，周流不休，上应星宿，下应经数。寒邪[邪:《病源》卷三十二《痈利候》、《久痈候》均作“寒气”客于经络[经络:《灵枢略》作“经脉”]之中则血泣，血泣则不通，不通则卫气归之，不得复反，故痈肿。寒气化为热，热胜则腐肉，肉腐则为脓，脓不泻则烂筋，筋烂则伤骨，骨伤则髓消，不当骨空，不得泄泻，血枯空虚，则筋骨肌肉不相荣，经脉败漏，熏于五藏，藏伤故死矣。

The condition of the circulation of the blood and energy is similar, and I will tell you the reason about it. The channel energy, the Ying-energy and the Wei-energy are circulating unceasingly, it symbolizes the stars above and symbolizes the tunnel below. If the cold energy invades the channel, the channel will become obstructed and becomes stagnant, the obstruction will cause the accumulation of the Wei-energy and it can hardly operate normally, and thus, the carbuncle is formed. The cold-evil can turn into heat, and when heat is excessing it will corrupt the muscle, and when the muscle is corrupted, it will change into pus, when the pus is not eliminated, it will corrupt the tendon, when the tendon is corrupted, it will injure the bone, when the bone is injured, it will consume the marrow, when the marrow is consumed, the bone will be empty, when the bone is empty, the energy will not be spreading, the blood will suffer heavy losses and the tendon, bone and the muscle will not be able to nourish each other, as a result, the channel will be corrupted, which will affect the internal five solid organs, when five solid organs are injured, the patient will die."

黄帝曰:愿尽闻痈疽之形，与忌曰[曰:《太素》卷二十六《痈疽》作“日”]名。岐伯日:痈发于嗌中，名曰猛疽，猛疽不治，化为脓，脓不泻，塞咽，半日死;其化为脓者，泻则合[合:《太素》卷二十六《痈疽》作“含”]豕膏，冷食[冷食:《外台》卷二十四“冷食”上并有“毋”字]，三日而已。
