Ni Shun
(The Agreeableness and Adverseness)
Yellow Emperor asked Bogao: "I am told that the energies have the difference of agreeableness and adverseness, the pulse conditions have the difference of overabundance and deficiency and the pricking has its general method, can you tell me about them?" Bogao said: "The agreeable and adverse running of energy in human body are corresponding to the heaven, earth, Yin, Yang, the four seasons and the five elements; when examining the over-abundance and deficiency of the pulse condition, one can determine the sthenia or asthenia of the disease and the having a surplus or deficiency of the blood and energy; when one treats with needle according to the general mothod of acupuncture, he must know precisely which kind of disease can be treated by pricking, which kind of disease must not be pricked for the time being and what kind of disease must not be pricked."
Yellow Emperor asked: "How to treat the disease which must not be pricked after examining?" Bogao said: "According to the art of war. one must not make a head-on attack to the approaching army which is irresistible, and one must not launch an attack to a strong and grand battle array of the enemy. In the 《Methods of Acupuncture》, it was stated: "Do not prick when the patient is suffering from fever excessively, do not prick when the patient is sweating all over, do not prick when the pulse condition of the patient is confusing and when the disease is contrary to the pulse condition." Yellow Emperor asked: "How to treat the disease which can be pricked after examining?" Bogao said: "For a physician of higher level. he can treat the disease which has not been manifested outside; nextly, he can treat and prick the disease of which its evil energy has not yet become overabundant: and nextly, he can treat and prick the discase of which its evil energy is declining. For a physician of lower level, he dares not prick when the diseases are overlapping, when the evil energy is prevailing or when the disease is contrary to the pulse condition, he waits until the evil energy has become deficient and then, take the opportunity to prick to receive a good curative effect. Thercfore, for a physician of higher level, he can not only treat the internal organ which is diseased, but can also treat the internal organ which has not contracted disease."
