3. 表示转折，有时与yet连用，它的意思相当于but，可翻译为“可是”、“但”、“然而”等。如：
* A black hole exerts a strong gravitational pull and it has no matter.
黑洞产生很强的吸引力，可是它没有物质。
* Most colds and flus are caused by viruses, and yet antibiotics don't harm viruses at all.
大多数感冒和流感是由病毒引起的，而抗生素对杀灭病毒丝毫不起作用。
4. and连接两个句子或两个动词，当后面的句子或动词表示事态进ー步发展了时，可译为“而且”、“并且”、“再”等；当and连接两个形容词或副词，表示平行关系时，可译为“而（且)”、“既……又”、“又……又”。如：
* The squirrel-cage motor is the least expensive a.c. motor of the three types considered and requires very little control equipment.
鼠笼式电动机是可供选择的三种型号中价格最低廉的，而且几乎不需要控制装置。
* The results are gathered on magnetic tape and compiled at the end of each day.
这些结果都收集在磁带上，并且在每天结束时加以汇编。
* When the assembly is balanced, attach washers to the lower surface of the base with masking tape and recheck balance.
部件已达到平衡吋，用胶粘带将垫圈贴在底座的下表面，再检验是否平衡。
* The projection is irregular and variable.
凸出部分既不规则又易变化。
* The operation is complicated and inaccurate.
操作方法又复杂又不精确。
5. 当and连接两个动词时，如果and后的动词表示前面动词的目的，and可以译为表示目的的词语“来”、“以”等；当and前面的句子是祈使句，并且该祈使句的动词 表示后面的动词（往往是ー个句子的谓语）的条件时，这时and可译为“那么”、“就”等。如：
* The plant requires nitrogen and makes proteins.
植物需要氮来制造蛋白质。
